Hi, I’m new to this forum and new to Dodge ownership.
I just bought a 2017 Ram Express with the 5.7 Hemi and only 80k miles. I want to change over to full synthetic oil. From what I’ve read Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Full Synthetic 5W-20 is the way to go for the oil. I could use some help choosing the proper oil filter.
Also, is there a K&N air filter for this engine?

Stock air filter more than adaquate. No KN oiled filters bad news for MAF sensor. I have an AEM dry filter that U clean every so often and reinstall after it dries. But NO oiled filters.

TB is right, because where Rams draw air behind the fender, OEM is hard top beat air filtration.

KN oil filters are paper, up to you on that.

There’s no benefit to the K&N, and possibly downsides. If you handle an OEM filter at the dealership, you’ll see they’re very high quality.

PUP 5W-20 is good oil, but there’s some speculation the amount of GTL may now be lower. Shell’s facility that produces that base is currently offline. There’s nothing wrong with stepping up in grade, either. There’s plenty of excellent 0/5W-30s out there. I like Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30. Great oil that’s high in esters and meets several stringent European approvals, but is cheaper than its boutique counterparts like Redline and Amsoil.

I like the Carquest Premium and the MicroGard Select filters, but that’s a point of debate around here.

I see some here are using the Purolator Boss PBL24651. Amazon and Walmart say this won’t fit on my truck. I went to the Purolator website and it says I need the PBL12222 Boss filter. Walmart and Amazon agree. Soooo, any opinions on this?

Yes, the Purolator Boss PBL24651 will fit. If you can find both filters at the same location you can compare them and see that the 24651 is noticeably larger. This is the size originally engineered for our Hemis on the earlier model years.

You can use either one, some of us prefer the larger filter.

Personally I find the smaller filter such as the PBL12222 is about the same size as the filter on my little riding mower with a 1-cylinder engine. I don't like it but that what is called for now. If you look up a 2010 Ram with 5.7L Hemi you will see the PBL24651 shows as correct.

What he said, 4 gen hemi's have two different filters option, early ones used a big filter - older ones use the small filter. If you want to know how bad the small ones have been, read oil filter thread. Just to be safe, buy one filter to see if it fits, if it fits your good. There has been a tiny number of people say the large one didn't fit, the over whelming members say the big ones fit any RAM.

No need to worry about the MAF sensor, there isn't one. Hemi uses a MAP sensor.
That being said, there is nothing good to be had by using a K&N.
In fact, I took my stock 5.7 air box and opened it up to the larger snorkel for the baby diesel and am using the 3.0 air filter - oem has deeper and larger pleats for more capacity.
I either use that or the OEM air filter.

Thought I'd share this with the forum, the Ecodiesel lower airbox takes the same air filter and top lid as the 5.7 trucks but has an inlet that is roughly 50% larger. The part numbers for these are: Inlet: 68190706AB Lower Box: 68232657AC Links to where I got them...

Next change you could consider going to a 5-30 or a 0-30 if you're using it year round in Montana.

If you want to hear the air move in the intakes …while you deliberately REDUCE your air filtration…because you don’t care if your engine sucks in seven-times more air than fuel and don’t believe dust and grit can shortly destroy your engine…. you Definitely Want a K&N air filter.

Welcome from the Bitterroots! I use to run K&N's but driving on gravel/dirt roads made me rethink that. I just run the Mopar ones. For oil filters I am partial to the Mobil 1 with the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil.

OW30 or 5W30 premium synthetic oils are the go-to for our HEMI's... depends on your geography..

I personally use 0W30 now as I'm in Ontario Canada and in the winter here my engine doesn't like the "5" aspect of the oil!

I do however use the larger synthetic media oil filters, either RP 20-820 or the Fram XG2 and go 10,000km OCI's... happy HEMI and well protected using this strategy, for me anyways.

I have spent hours reading these threads and watching video links on what oil and what filter to use with the Hemi engine from this forum. It gets confusing at times from all of the opinions. Then there are folks talking about a bad lifter, scared cam shaft. The only "tick" I've had was the broke exhaust bolt on the right side shorty headers I have. I have used PUP 5/W20 with the larger MO-899 filter since the 3rd oil change every 5K miles. I hope I'm doing right by it living here in the tropics of Houston. Winter is just a weekend here. Also I have seen where some members have their oil sent to labs to be tested. Is this worth the effort? I have no idea for the cost of this. I only have 51K on the clock. Then there is the high mileage issue which I don't call a vehicle with 75K high. Its not keeping me up at nights but it gets somewhat confusing to me.

So not true , 5w30 Red Line is all I run in -40 here . Southern Ontario dosent even know what cold actually is.. lol...

The coldest I started my truck was -52 a couple years back, even plugged in it almost didnt start... The noises that came out the engine bay was pretty neat.

That's why i like oil pan heaters,they start better when the oils warm at temps below -30,and don't rattle and bang near as long,lol.If you have both a block heater and oil pan heater plugged in for a couple hours at -40 or colder ,it'll start alot better then if it just has the block heater plugged in
