So member adrianp89 brought this test to the Syn thread, but this test is good enough to have it's own thread and many guys have tuned out of the Syn thread. This test proves the benefit from spun micro glass filters, all of the top three performers where spun microglass, and others such as Wix XP weren't tested. Anyhow, spun micro glass not only filters better out of the gate, but lasts much longer and holds contamination better. The top three filters tested in order are Royal Purple, Amsoil EA and Fram Ultra in third and the most economical choice. The test shows a different name for the third place filter, but it was changed to Ultra that year 2011. Below is the test filter after it passed through the tested filter (the name of the filters on the left), this is a compilation of the filters and as you can tell no noticeable contamination 30microns pass through the royal purple filter. Very little passed through the Amsoil or Fram Ultra. Read through the test page to see all of the results. Bottom line, Cellulose filters simply do not filter as good as synthetic media at any point in your oil change interval.

The paper mopar filter would be like all of the paper, it will let more through then the synthetic. SRT filters may be synthetic, so they would be in the top tier.

Nope Redline 5w20 is a fantastic oil

No, I use either 5w20 or 5w30, both good base oil and additives. The 5w30 does give a little better film strength, but I would use that 5w20 with confidence. But let's get back to filters...

I consider the Wix XP right up there!

FYI the Wix XP filter (at least for my '17) can be had for 6 bux or so from RockAuto. I know shipping is involved, but 6.99 shipping cost covered 10 or 11 filters if you want to maximize your shipping money.

So what's the word on the Wix XP filter?

I believe the Wix XP to have tighter thinner pleats then the RP, so is that better or worse, no way to tell unless they would be included in the test, there is an argument for either being better. If there was one downside to this test they left the most popular OTC filter Wix XP (Ultra honorable mention on popularity) out of the test. In my opinion, the use of any synthetic filter is a huge benefit over paper. Remember, this test was at 30 microns, now the industry tests at 20 or 25 microns, so the news would even be worse at those smaller particles! If this test was at 25 microns, those paper filter would look much worse, and all of that travels through your engine. I don't like taking oil talk out of the oil thread, but this finding was pretty important and impressive. Why would anyone ever use paper filters again? If cost is the issue, just buy the Fram Ultra, you still get way better filtration at a very reasonable cost. In fact, the conductor of the test put Ultra as their top choice mainly because of the price.

The XP gets a bad rap due to its “low” efficiency. In reality, I wonder how the XP efficiency rating compares to the stock Mopar?

When I look at this test I think of my furnace at home. Do I buy the cheap air filters and change it out more often? I could also go with the more expensive air filter that has more pleats and potentially put more strain on other internal parts of my furnace.

Spun microglass also has better flow. You can always test it yourself, you wont be having any difference in oil pressure between synthetic or paper, because generally it isn't a big deal. I would encourage you to research your statement. I do appreciate it, it is a good point to consider and probably a popular misconception. Here.

Synthetic fibers offer the filter designer more pore spaces per surface area unit, which means more channels to capture dirt, or let the fluid pass through.

*sigh* And of course, Royal Purple still refuses to make one for the Pentastar.

Lots of 3.6s running around in 1500s, Challengers, Wranglers...you'd think they would've made one by now.

Fram makes a a synthetic media filter for the pentastar. It's the only one available as far as I know...
