For the first time in 20+ years of changing my own oil, I couldn't get the oil filter on. I discovered that the threads had been ruined. To be frank, I was s###ting bricks wondering what to do.
Thankfully the threads are easily replaced. I used a 1 inch deep socket and a big breaker bar to get the thing off. When installing, I used thread locker just to be safe. I have attached a pic of the piece that I replaced. I thought I would post this in case someone else runs into this in the future.
Now as for the root cause, it could certainly have been my own fault cross threading the filter. Though I will say that I have always had difficulty installing the oil filter since buying the truck 3 years ago. For some reason it was always hard to start threading the filter on. Another possible cause is that I used an aftermarket filter instead of a Mopar one. And I know that the 2008 model had a different thread pitch for the 4.7 motor than previous years so I may have been given the wrong one.
