I just got home after purchasing a new 2016 Laramie 1500 with the 5.7 hemi. I have a question. I have an 2005 hemi and when you start it the oil pressure reads steady up the middle hot or cold regardless of the rpm. This new hemi runs in the middle only above idle and drop just slightly to the left at idle. My only concern is i have an older hemi that runs a constant pressure. After finally breaking down and buying a new one...just wanted to know if others act the same? Thanks in advance!

I literally just st got home with it. Does the Laramie have an actual oil pressure you can view in the in the gauge cluster? I need to get the owners manual I guess and look through it. My older hemi is rock solid and this fluctuates with ram... Like cars use to do.

Yes it has an oil pressure readout in the cluster. Cycle through and you'll find it.
That guage is hardly accurate and what you're describing sounds like what mine (both the 5.7 and 6.4) have done. It's almost like a dumb switch. I'd bet you're sitting in the 30's at idle. The low oil pressure threshold is alarmingly low too- I wouldn't worry unless it never changes in the digital read out or you get a CEL related to oil.

Almost all cars have "dummy" oil pressure gauges.

My Z06 has an actual oil pressure gauge, and that sucker is CONSTANTLY moving up and down, even during normal driving.

Your oil pressure will vary quite a bit under normal driving conditions. The lowest pressure is when at idle when the motor is warm. Highest pressure is at high RPM and load when the engine is cold, but that's not recommended. General rule of thumb is about 10psi for every 1,000rpm, but it may be different.

I appreciate the responses. Now that I've driven it alittle more and scrolled through the gauges. What is normal engine temp and pressures? Just cruising with outside temps in the upper 70's with all the rain I'm +/-220 on the engine oil temp. 52 oil pressure cruising with engine rpms around 1,500. Engine coolant around 206 and transmission temp around 190. The trans and engine oil temps seem high for empty load and just cruising.? Truck seems to run and shift ok. Can't ask a dealer... Anything you have going on your truck is normal. Lol

My pressure is generally 52-53 while cruising on a warm engine, anywhere from 23-33 warm engine in gear stopped and I've seen it spike to 68 on a cold engine under load.

Your coolant and oil temps are fine. They'll fluctuate a bit with ambient temps and load.

I can't speak on your trans temps since you probably have the 8 speed. My 6 speed stays around 140 just cruising and I've never seen it go over 175 while towing 8000#.

I was monitoring my gauges on the way home from a long drive today. Outside air temp was around 80, between 90-100% humidity:

Coolant: 203
Oil: 212
Trans: 135
Oil Press: 59

That was cruising with nothing in tow at about 60 mph. If your trans temps are 190, that seems a bit high.

Again I appreciate the responses. Reading on challenger and charger sites and with the 5.7 and 8 speed they have similar numbers. I don't know what to think. Guess as long as it drives. Quality of all new cars is subpar with very little customer service. But if you want one you have to pray you get one build by a few people that actually gave a crap that day. Haha

You sure about that trans temp,i'd guess it should be 185,not 135,if you're that cold, you have an oddball truck, even the 6 speed after 2013 runs hotter then that.13 is when they brought in the tranny thermostat on the 6 speed

100%. It was between 131-136 the whole ride. Cruising between 45-70.

Somethings a bit oddball then. The 6 speed with the tranny thermostat in place should run around 170'ish,and the 8 speed should be at 185 .Thermal management came in on the 2013s and the tranny temps went up,even when I pulled the tranny thermostat on my old 13 it still ran at 160/165. Do some digging about the thermal management system, and you'll see your tranny temp is a bit of an oddball for a 14

I'm not complaining. I took this pic on the way into work this morning just to show you I'm not full of crap.
