I thought I would start a new thread. I have had a pump whine for 4000kms that I have been trying to solve. History. New engine rebuild. ( pistons, rings, bearings, heads, valve springs, MMX cam, MDS delete, new water pump, Hellcat lifters, timing set with guides, polished crank etc. ) From newly rebuilt, I have a whine that is loud cold, and gets quieter when warm, but I can still hear it. The shop had removed the belt and thought it's coming from the front. I felt like it was coming from the transmission/TQ. I got the truck back in for another go over. They feel its still from the oil pump area. My idle pressure is good. ( it was talked about in another thread )
The oil pump that is in there is a Melling HV pump, HP spring installed. Besides a defective oil pump, what else could it be? A poorly polished crank would make the same noise cold or warm? A bad tensioner or chain would make the same noise cold or warm? I have done oil testing and have not seen anything strange.
Things I need to do.
Buy a Dorman 621-410 E-fan to get rid of a sticky clutch fan. ( cant find a used Ram V6 fan )
Change the oil @ 2400 kms to do another sample.
Thought about buying a Hellcat oil pump, but may go back to stock.
(I have the idle already at 750rpm with a Hemifever tune.)
Can anyone think of anything else that could be making the noise besides the pump, that sounds like a pump?

Have you tried crawling under it while its idling, with a short piece of hose?

Use it like a stethoscope. Stick one end to your ear and the other end to the oil pump area of the oil pan.

Then do it again, to the bell housing area.

I had an unidentified whine one time and that method helped me narrow it down to the pinion bearing in the rear end.

I did use a hose and to me it was from the rear ish. The echo makes it hard to pinpoint though. Three techs and the owner today again said they feel it’s the front. They used stethoscopes.

That's a tough one.

If your luck is anything like mine, then regardless of which end you tear into, the problem will be on the other one.
