with my 2013 1500 hemi cc sport, towing a 7500# rv my oil hit almost 250, coolant was 219 and tranny was 177, this was not a constant temperature, only happening at the top of a grade which I went up revving no more than 3750 rpm. Is the oil safe to that temperature? not too worried about the trans temp, the fan kicks in around 215-220 for the coolant anyways...but the oil temp worried me. ideas, info, suggestions?

Hope ya got Airbags for those 4th Gen Squatty Coils....(J/K)
Sounds OK to me, and although on my 3rd Gen I don't have fancy guages and trans guage not yet hooked my coolant Temp shoots a tad past half on the guage when I am upgrade but quickly subsides back to half when the load gets level again and my trailer is 6955 Dry. ThankGod for HD transcooler, E-Fan and SRT-8 Heat extraction.

Sure some of the other New Ram Towers will chime in for a better perspective!

Edit: Welcome to RamForum BTW!

If it were my money I would install a Mag-Hytec finned, high capacity oil pan and then see if I need to mess with the plumbing.

I wouldn't worry about it. if you are, then just change the oil.

Unless you have an aftermarket cooler on it for the oil, (or even a factory one), the only thing that cools the oil is the radiator, and if it is 220, then your oil is gonna be a good 20-40 deg higher, as the coolant never gets all the heat out of the block & heads, which is where the oil is.

Ever parked a vehicle that was 200 deg on the gage, shut the engine off, and 5 minutes later, it's 230 or more ??

Thats the latent heat in the metal, and is a good indicator of how much hotter than the coolant your oil will run normally.

Look at this. I use a good synthetic. 40 MPH head wind. Spent 2 hours at those readings. While most peeps think they are crazy readings, all numbers are within the operating limits of the vehicle. I have a zero issue truck....

I agree. A synthetic should cure this. If it were constant I might be worried. Since it was only at the top of a steep grade I would say its normal.

wow never have seen that high on mine. 215 tops for oil even when i have hit over 5k on rpms for short bursts. Usually oil for me is 195-205 in normal driving depending on outside temps. Coolant is about the same too and most time 215 is about tops too with the 5k plus revs. Although I did switch to synthetic at my first oil change at 3000 miles and been on synthetic ever since.

I'm with LB; never hit over 215 towing my 7,000lb trailer through our hills, rocky mountains etc. Maybe it's our altitude? I do run Amsoil XL synthetic oil and change it every 5,000Km but that's all I do to help it.

I installed a 180 Jet thermostat from Moes. Think it was like 40 bucks. Cheap insurance for a 30k truck. My coolant runs at 185, oil at 200 and trans at 140.

I was thinking this was an issue as well but when I researched it, all name brand oils will protect within this range and we really don't have to worry about viscosity break down until 260F or so for conventional and 20-40 degrees higher for synthetic.

Here is mine with a light load in the bed but this is normal when empty as well.

Interesting thing is that during an 8 hour trip, tranny fluid is barely lukewarm, lol.

This was when I was traversing some hills with about 500lbs in the bed.

That is as high as I've ever seen it and I doubt if it would go much higher as long as the cooling system is operating properly. I think the gauge itself is misleading since it shows 3/4 of the way before you are maxed out but temperature wise, I think the indicator should be more at half to be acurate.

Oh and sorry for the crappy pics. The sun was on the driver's side that day and I hadn't had the windows tinted yet.:sorry:

My normal summer run to the Sierra summed up in another post. Ambient temp that day was 85*
Sherwin grade rises out of Bishop, CA at 4150ft to the summit at Tom's Place, CA at 7100feet. A 6% grade for 24 miles. The Hemi hauled it at 60mph with 3.55's. The engine never went over 219* and the tranny 193*.
