Does everyone here in Ontario (or rest of Canada ) have their 2500 or up listed as commercial for license plate fees due to weight?
I argue it’s just my daily driver and should be exempt !
Anyone found a way around this with out stripping the truck and getting re-weighed ?

I suspect that this is just another money-making scam by insurance companies.

I recently received a notification informing me that at the next policy renewal in November, my annual cost would increase by $500 unless I pay $400 to have air tags installed.

So apparently, this comes from the Insurance Bureau of Canada and is supposed to be industry-wide, I'd call it an embezzlement scam.

I'll be starting my search for a better deal tomorrow but don't have much confidence after a buddy called earlier and said he had his tags installed for the same reason.

He drives a 2020 Ferd with a keyed ignition.

I think he is referring to the CVOR requirement for some vehicles and it is based on Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
My neighbour has a 2500 and is not subject to the CVOR requirement. Commercial vehicles, essentially of any sort, require an annual inspection in Ontario.

Is your truck in your own name or a company’s name? That seems to make a difference here in Alberta. Any vehicle used as a “private passenger vehicle” is not considered a commercial vehicle and therefore exempt from the yearly inspections. But if it’s under a company name, it’s automatically commercial, because a company owned vehicle would not be considered a private passenger vehicle.

My apology for the insurance hike rant.

Would most HD pickup trucks in Ontario not qualify for exemption from CVOR due to having a GVWR of <6500KG (14,330lbs)?

You do not need a CVOR certificate for:
  • trucks or buses plated in another Canadian province or territory (you must have a safety certificate from the province or territory where the vehicle was plated)
  • trucks (other than a tow truck) with registered gross weight or gross weight of 4,500 kg or less, whether towing a trailer or not
  • trucks or buses leased by an individual for 30 days or less to move personal goods or to carry passengers at no fare
  • ambulances, fire trucks, hearses, casket wagons
  • unladen trucks or buses operating under the authority of dealer plates or in-transit permits
  • buses used for personal purposes without compensation
  • motor homes used for personal purposes
  • pickup trucks for personal use that meet all of the following conditions:
    • have a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating not exceeding 6,500 kg (14,330 lb)
    • are being used for personal purposes without compensation
    • are fitted with either the original, unmodified box installed by the manufacturer, or an unmodified replacement box that duplicates the one installed by the manufacturer
    • are not carrying or towing a trailer carrying commercial cargo or tools, or equipment of any type normally used for commercial purposes

In a nutshell, if it is used in the normal course of business to generate revenue, it must have a current CVOR sticker on it.
Interestingly, I have seen SOME OPP vehicles with the yellow sticker. Primarily SUVs. Now THEY do not meet the weight classification but they do in fact generate revenue!

The truck is in my name, no company, just my daily driver. Where everyone else in Ontario no longer has to pay for the yearly plate sticker , I do ($265).
The service Ontario says I’d have to strip the truck and get it officially re weighed to not be listed as commercial ?

Did you review the exemption list above and which qualification does your truck exceed, according to the overlords?

Is the GVWR of your truck more than 6500 KG?

Have you tried going to a different place for registration? That seems so weird that they are doing that to you.

Something sticks in the back of my mind that you can "license" it for a lower weight than the GVW on the data plate. It is worth checking in to.
