Just wanted to post a run down of what the truck is doing and see what input is out there. The good thing is I have the max care warranty so everything should be covered.
2016 3500 crew cab/shortbed tradesman with 6.4 (non aisin) 4x4 approx 68000
This is a work truck and tows 12k+ pretty regularly
So I had a shift solenoid pack (I believe) go bad several months ago which was evident as it wasn’t downshifting properly-this was only real noticeable towing, coincidentally they had recently released a recall for this. Problem solved.
A few weeks ago it seems to be shifting off, lagging at time and hitting harder than normal at times so I contacted the dealer and slated the 60k service (doors was about 65k). They actually tried to save me the $ and said it was basically pointless since they had flushed it when the decal was done, I explained my concerns with shifting and they agreed it was worth a shot and would simplify a warranty claim if needed later.
Friday I was hailing one of our mini excavators (total load around 12000) and noticed it wasn’t downshifting when I was on longer grades regardless of throttle position, switching to manual did nothing- the numbers change but no actual shifting. The I get off the highway and into town, hit a stop light, then when trying to go it’s a bit slugging but nothing overly dramatic. Down hill-good, immediate steep grade and it is on its face in a high gear and won’t down shift. I went from 35-15 quick and luckily was able to turn of the road quickly. As I pull to a stop I get the trans temp high light, check the readings and it’s in the 180s but slowly starts climbing so I check fluids to see if it’s burned/low which it is neither. Let it sit a few and the light goes out and the temp stabilized around 200. I called the dealer service and spoke to the same guy I always deal with, he remembers the whole deal, history and my recent concerns. Time to move as I am basically blocking a small street, seems ok until the next incline when it repeats even worse, likely stuck in 4-5th, this time I was able to pull into a garage slot and drop the trailer so someone else can retrieve. Unhook and take off as it drives alright unloaded and get it to the house about a mile away. As I go to park it gets a CEL finally.
From what I have read this code seems to typically cause issues shifting up into the higher gears, hence why I made this post-let’s see what ol’ fiat/chrysler/dodge/ram can come up with this time!
