Painting The Machined Cuts?

Looking for input on painting the machined cuts matte black on my MO962's. This would be a time consuming and delicate process, even more if I need to sand those cuts.

With that said, if It won't last, I don't want to entertain the idea and will consider having the entire rims powder coated or getting something else. But, painting the cuts would be preferred. Thoughts on wether or not it can be accomplished?

I agree I think it would be a very time consuming process. If you have the time maybe it would be a good project----if not I vote to have them powder coated. Nice looking rim, by the way.

Thanks! My experience is in painting foam where there is zero room for error or your stuck with it.

Here's a 12 hour paint job in my world. I have the patience for delicate work, just don't want to waist my time and have it flaking off anytime soon.

That looks great!!!! I would guess that the rims need to be at least scuffed before you paint and then additional put a coat of clear then color sand before polish/wax. It sure looks like you have the skills, Im just not sure if the paint will eventually start to chip after a while.

Yeah, I agree on the scuffing as well as clear coat will be important with wheel cleaning and all. Probably not going to be able to pull off that deep matte black, but I'm okay with that.

Hopefully a few people have done this and can chime in.

Time consuming thing about that job is the masking off the rest off the wheel,You will have to run the tape perfect along along all those edges.4 wheels.Are you going red etc or keeping it black?

Thanks Bruce! I'm going to go black for my "Murdered Out" theme. I'm good with the invested time and have confidence in the tapes I use that will give me those nice straight lines that won't lift on me while I'm spraying. I just need to figure out the protocol of paint and application steps to ensure it sticks and lasts, should it be possible.

Man, that's a real tough call without first hand experience. I'd imagine you'll have a hell of a time trying to scuff a machined edge. Give it a try on one area of one wheel. Use some self etching primer and adhesive promoter an then see how hard it is to scrape it off, powerwash, etc.

Thanks for that J. I was on that thread last night. I see another person has since chimed in on the G2. I'll look into it further. As for the scuffing, I think I can pull it off since the edges on the cuts are sharp. It will be a delicate process, but the worst that can happen is I screw it up and just get them powder coated. Hopefully that G2 is convincing enough to get me to give it a try.

No problem. Looks like the precision work won't be a problem for you, I was just thinking wtf you are going to need to use to scuff up a machined finish... Maybe a Dremel? Either way, I'd do a small test first, because like you said... It would suck to spend the time just to have all your hard work be for not. Been there done that lol
