My truck seems to be a never ending evolving project. I just got 35s, lift kit is in the mail, running boards and winch mount going on this weekend. I know performance/mileage are going to drop, gears are going to be my next big purchase. I'm looking to maximize street/highway/towing performance economy ( I know I know) any way I have the 6 speed and 35s currently, surprisingly didn't lose much but I know I will with the lift and extra weight I'm adding. Debating between 3.92 and 4.10s looking for input. And would a grand$ cover the cost of getting the gears done?

A good shop, charging a fair amount should be around $500 per axle. Gears are going to be a little bit over a grand if memory serves me correctly. I'd move straight to 4.10's depending on your setup.

With 35's though and depending on the size of your lift, you're going to be skewed in one direction, not maximizing anything, IMHO.

This is going to cost a lot more than $1000. Cheapest route would be 3.92's which are $400 for the rear gears and another $100 for the bearing kit. Up front, you cannot simply bolt in a new ring gear because yours is welded to the carrier. This means you have to replace the entire front axle with 1 that has 3.92's. You are looking at roughly $2000-$2500 for this setup after parts and labor.

If you want 4.10's, then you are looking at $700 for the rear gears plus another $100 for the bearing kit. Then you need an 09-11 front axle and driveshaft, as well as the aftermarket 4.10 gears and bearing kit for the 8" front. This option is going to run you closer to $3000-$3500 after parts and labor.

Couldn't I just get a new carrier? Why does that require a complete axle swap?

I have 4.10s with stock dia tires. That's about right, or maybe still just a smidge tall.

If I was on 35s, I'd definitely want 4.56s. If you're going to spend all that money, you may as well pay a little more and get it right. That's assuming that 4.56s can be made to work.

You can if you find 1 in a junkyard. Dodge does not sell the front carrier by itself...only as a complete axle.

I called Randys ring and pinion today, the guy said they have a couple of dealer trucks in the shop right now and are working on gear swap kits for the 14-15 rams and that they are hoping to have something by next month. Fingers crossed.
