Anyone have a Crew-Cab 4x4 1500 with the Pentastar v-6. I've read a lot about the engine, but am looking for real owners input. Is it enough engine, or do I need to get the Hemi? It would be used for commuting roughly 70 miles a day, occasionally towing a side by side on a single axle trailer.

i have one in my wrangler and it is more than enough engine. it wont equal a hemi, but the HP and torque numbers are very close to the 4 gen numbers of the 4.7 V8 it replaced, with impressive mpg numbers.

A friend of mine just had Chrysler buy it back. Had so many trans problems. Engine was great but the Chrysler built 8speed was garbage.

I have one in my regular cab 2wd and it's plenty of engine for that, but for a bigger truck with 4x4 I'd likely go ahead and get the hemi to be on the safe side.

ZF produces the 8spd for the hemi and maybe Eco, but the 845re behind the pentastar is all Chrysler.

There are two versions. The ones that are behind the v6 are built by Chrysler. The ones being the hemi are the zf built ones.

I have a Crew Cab 2wd with the Pentastar and 3.21 gears, and it would be more than enough for what you're looking for. My trans has been perfect through 22k miles. If you're worried at all about towing, you can go with the 3.55 rear end.

For comparisons, it feels much peppier than the 4.8 and 5.3 I've driven in 2013 Chevys. Way better than the old Ford 4.6. I would suggest going and test driving one if you haven't already, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised.

Also - comparisons of driving a Pentastar Wrangler and a Pentastar Ram aren't really too great. I've driven both quite a bit and the 8 speed in the Ram makes a world of difference.

I've got the pentastar in my town and country. It's more than adequate. That's with the van six speed though.

Would this be the same 8spd in the grand Cherokees? Was looking at buying a one or two year old grand Cherokee limited for the wife, but if they have **** trannys.......maybe I'll get a Honda Pilot instead.

For what it's worth, I don't know if I've read about any other trans problems like described above. Don't be scared away by the Chrysler produced 8 speed.

So I understand this correctly, there are 2 different transmissions behind the Pentastar engine, or Chrysler makes the one in the Pentastar and ZF makes the one in the Hemi? How do I tell the difference in transmissions, if there are 2 made for the Pentastar?

The zf built 8hp70 is behind the hemi. The Chrysler built 8hp45 is behind the v6.

Bought my 2013 Ram 1500 SLT CC 4x4 new with the v6/8spd/3.21. I have a bit over 26k miles on it now with no issues.

Moved 2x in a year with the back seat, bed and a 5x8 U-Haul fully loaded (1 bdrm apt's worth). Each move was approximately 600 miles averaging 65-75 mph without issue (VA to IN to SC). Is it a hemi, no, but it does everything I need it to do as a daily driver and gets damn good mph for my driving style.

I have a 2015 Ram Crew Cab 4x4 with the V6 and a 8 Speed auto with about 10k miles
runs great lots of power I get about 23-24mpg. Compaired to my 2005 Big Horn Ram Hemi with 3.92 gears , the new truck with a V6 is close 2nd no the new one will not tow as much asMy old truck. Maintenance cost will be much less 6 plugs at 100k miles vs 16 at 40 k miles in the Hemi. 7 quart oils changes in the Hemi standard 4.5 in the V6. I am not knocking anybody’s truck the new Ram with the V6 is great for me it will haul all I need plus it’s a great daily driver

I'm missing 2 cylinders
I have the v6 2wd 3.55 but mine is lifted and im on bigger tires. Pulls great, plenty of power and does fine off road. Yes the hemi is friggen awesome but I was fine with the v6 for now cause it has more power than my 07 4.7 v8 had.

the 8-speed that came with my v6 would sometimes slightly bump into first gear from park when it was cold, then sometimes would do so again from 1st to 2nd. It did that randomly for the first 3k miles, then it quit. I guess it was broken in at that point. No problems since.
