Hey All,

Is this the correct PPE pan (part #228053410) for a 2017 Ram 1500?
How many quarts of transmission fluid should I buy for the install?

Thanks

It's alot easier if you put a link up to it,as some of us are to lazy to look it up.PS: the forum also gets credits for links to products ,so don't be shy about putting up a link to whatever you want us to check out.
If the pans for a ZF 8HP70 it'll fit.
Spring for about 7 quarts of fluid, you might have a bit left over, but it's better to have to much fluid then not enough fluid

"If only there was a dozen threads on this already :dogpile:"

Indeed, there is; however, it isn't mentioned that the PPE pan features a raised edge where the transmission fluid seals. Consequently, I will be returning the pan, as this design prevents me from accurately verifying the flatness of the machined aluminum surface. So OE it is.

Post a picture of the PPE pan you have,as i've never seen one with a raised edge, that would stop you from using a straightedge to check it's flatness.

Alright, I just finished my OE Mopar transmission pan and fluid change at 57,500 miles. I decided to try something I haven’t seen anyone else on here do yet. I jacked my truck up 12" to get the transmission level, and just for funzies, I decided to check the stock fluid level before draining it.

I warmed the transmission up and pulled the fill plug at 95°F, but nothing came out. I even stuck my pinkie finger in as far as I could, but it stayed dry. I thought about lowering the truck to level the frame and checking the level again, but I was running out of daylight. I wish I’d had more time to try that.

Following the "green sheet" instructions for the transmission fill, I put in about 5.5 quarts, even though only about 4.5 quarts came out during the drain. I really wish I had checked the fluid level while the truck frame was level. I took it out for a spin and didn't see any leaks, so that is a good sign! I’m just sharing my experience for everyone else on here. Good luck!

Edit:
P.S. The OE transmission fluid was still nice and green, and it even smelled like soap!

Does using the PPE pan help? Like lower trans temp (my gage says normally 186-F) better with extra fluid capacity etc...? Would like to hear from someone who has this on their 5th gen 8-speed auto trans.

It helps but not as much as you were probably hoping for.The 8 speed has it's own thermostat, that's totally seperate from the engines thermostat,if you really want to lower your 8 speeds temps, look into getting one of Jesse Caulks thermostat bypasses.

That's about how much fluid came out, and got put in my Ram when I changed mine, and how much I have read that others have drained from theirs as well.

I think someone mentioned that it seems the new vehicles don't get topped off when they're built. Sure seems like it.

My 24 1500 classic was low by a pint in transmission, half a pint in front diff, and rear diff.

Do the math, over 300k vehicles a quarter, that's a bunch of cost savings. All those areas don't have dip sticks.

Thank you Wild. I haven't purchased the pan, was thinking about it but you saved me 300 bucks. I will look into the t-stat bypass. Stop by Thursday and I'll buy you the cheeseburger basket at the horse track for your advice. :party36:

The pans seem to be out of stock everywhere at the moment. I hope there is a new batch soon.

I can't see wasting money on the POS OE pan. I'm planning to buy the PPE +2quart pan and Jesse's thermal bypass bundle kit.

Then buy a couple of replacement filter kits.

I recently (last Nov) bought a 2017 Ram 1500 RWD.
OP: correct pan (black, brushed aluminum, stock capacity).
I got 2+ quart (228053000), 2 extra filters (228058600), BD Diesel exhaust manifolds, the cheapo Mevotech TTX front suspension & hub assemblies, Monroe Air Suspension conversion (to coils/shocks), inner & outer tie rods.
On the transmission fluid, got 12 liters of Eurol ATF 6700. I removed approx 6 liters and replaced with a total of approx 9 liters.
Not aure how old the fluid was, but it wasn't green (neither is the Eurol) or burnt/stinky. Did a 100 mile road test Sunday. Other than a steering angle sensor causing no traction control/ABS/Cruze it's alright.
Sure road good for AT tires and every ball joint and tie rod being burnt toast.

On the trans fluid temps...before and after the PPE 176F/80C is highest I've seen. Haven't towed anything with it yet.

The biggest advantage of the PPE pan to me is the drain plug location. As in, it’s much more convenient.
