So the other day I went wheeling for the first time with my 14x3 mod and ended up getting mud and water on the filter. It was a paper filter so nothing got through and my truck ran fine. Shortly after that I went home and ordered an outerwears pre filter. I'm planning on getting a k&n, should I not run the k&n off road or has anybody run a k&n with a prefilter with no problems.

I ran a K&N with no problems in some pretty dusty conditions without a prefilter on my Gen2 with the 14x3 mod. Never dealt with mud or water though.

Personally I don't believe an any washable media filters. I just seen another truck over on local diesel site just loose a engine to a washable AFe air filter. Wiped out the block and rings which will cost him dearly just for being able to wash the filter.

The thing is every time you wash the filter you breaking down the media. It's up to you as a owner to inspect the media for defects and replace it when visible holes appear. The other problem is with washable media filter is most owner don't wash them properly and end up placing the dirt on the engine side of the filter for the engine to suck in later.

Dry paper elements are the best hands down to any dirt /dusty conditions over any washable media. If you got deep pockets you can keep the washable media if not I highly suggest you look for a paper elements.

and i see alot of people put way to much oil on the filter also. it only tkes a little bit.

Boils down to taking care of the product. Do it right and it will be better, but do it wrong and it will cost you more. But same could be said for a lot of mods we do to our trucks =)~
As for adding a prefilter it will help keep the dirt and water out but will NOT stop it, esp the water. If you plan on running that deep often, or even every now and then, relocate your intake. I'm not planning in going in anything deep. It just splashed up a lot further than I thought it would. I'm running a 2wd so a pre filter should be just what I need, hopefully.
