Hey all,

Did some searching and was unable to find a concise answer.

Is there any reason anyone would NOT want the LSD factory option other than the $500 price? Are there any downsides to having it on these trucks vs. the standard diff?

I can't think of a negative aspect of one, assuming gear ratio is the same.

TIA

Only reason I can think of, is if you got the Elec Locking Diff instead .... But no, there is no down side to a LSD

On a 2wd, If you are on a surface that slopes to the side, if you lose traction, the entire rear of the vehicle will tend to slide to the downhill side. As long as you are aware of this problem and adjust your driving to account for it, the positives of LSD far outweigh this one negative.

And the traction control limits most of this issue ....

Honestly with the way abs works on this truck to control the wheel spin it is pretty impressive. Its a safe setup in the winter for average person that can't drive. I tried playing in the snow this morning and it doesn't whip around fast like a posi. The old one wheel peel lol. That being said I'd prefer an lsd

I don't know if this is true but in another thread in this forum I recall them saying that the clutches in that lsd aren't replaceable. Maybe someone with direct experience can chime in.

The clutches themselves are not serviceable individually. If they wear out, replacement of the entire assembly would be required. Unless the truck sees a lot of heavy off road use, the clutches should last quite awhile.

And to add to this, change your rear axle oil! The first change should be done sooner than many think due to contamination from break in.

If you go LSD stay away from factory unit they have no preload and do not work well
I would go with Trutrac unit works well and no special additives needed

i blew my spider gears in my rearr back in sept... found out the hard way that there are no individual parts for the factory LSD, AND the carrier i took out was slightly different internally than the one i put in ( tried to cheat and just replace the spider and no go)

my truck is not a daily driver and sees little hard use, so i didnt explore alternatives

but i will say both wheels spun equally under power so i cant complain about the design as far as function goes for me

I searched this subject because I have a problem I was hoping to get some direction on. I just got a tru trac in the rear end of my 2017 Ram 1500 4x4. I live on a large winding hill with drop offs on both sides. When I go down the hill in ice/snow in 4 low (esc automatically turns off in 4 low) and If I need to hit the brake, my tru trac wants to lock in and push me down the hill. My truck has a 6.4l ported intake manifold, CAI, LT headers, Greene Tune and Greene Trans time. Other mods are ported tb, underdrive pulley, low temperature thermostat, e-fan mod. Not sure if these things matter but more info is better. Can anyone help me? I turned down the idle rpms already. Is more power hurting me. Should I just get a big brake kit? Should I have a different trans tune? I feel comfortable climbing the hill but going down the hill is pretty scary. Any suggestions? Anybody else ever had LSD’s working against the brakes?

I should also say that I have noticed that when I engine brake (even picking my own lower gear) it seems to just let go sometimes. Is my truck just trying to kill me?

The LSD has no capability to provide “push” or torque that isn’t supplied by the engine and trans. All it does is bias the torque to attempt to make both wheels rotate at the same speed. Which in a situation like this results in both breaking loose at the same time and the rear may pass the front going downhill. You may have better results descending in 4H or even 2H and let ESC and TC do their magic.

This was basically stated above, but the True Trac shouldn't act any differently than an open diff when coasting or applying the brakes. These style diffs only bias power side to side based on the torque going into through the driveshaft, which when coasting or braking there is none.

It's not your truck trying to kill you, it's mother nature.

Seriously, down hill on ice... short of studded tires you just grip the wheel hard, clinch your ass cheeks and pray.
