When i first got my truck i ran Mobil 1 oil mainly because of availability in my 17 6.4 i switched to pup after i seen Mobil don't meet specs.
I plan to keep using the pup the motor sounds great it had a small tick before now it's very quiet and smooth. My question is while using the pup oil should i also be putting in extra molly.
I am looking to have this 6.4 last me a long time and just want to make sure i do what i can.
I change my oil every 5k and see a lot of stuff about molly additive. Just curious if i should put it in or if the pup has enough to protect the cam/ lifters.

So m1 meets spec, they don't cert spec, which is different. Anyhow, if you are on 0w40 PUP I wouldn't change a thing or add a thing, unless you develop warm idle tick. 0w40 PUP best oil as is for your truck.

The sweet spot of moly is > 200ppm, and PUP 0w40 has that. So I would only consider adding a moly substitute like lubegard biotech IF I had warm idle tick or start up tick, or cold piston slap in the last case I may opt for a thinner oil.

PUP 0w40 has 250ppm moly give or take, just under 300ppm moly is the highest moly level of easily to obtain group 3 otc oils. PUP 0w40 is amount the highest moly's oils, but other PUP oils are not, stay with 0w40.

Guys. I read a lot about piston slap. Be it cold or warm. Are u referring to that slight noise that almost sounds like ‘dieseling’?

Awesome info guys. I had some tick with the Mobil oil.On my second change with the pup and absolutely no tick now. I had just seen where moly additive is good with some oil and was curious about the pup. I couldn't find the ppm for the pup.
Appreciate the input thanks again

I don't know about 10w30 that I remember, 5w20 or 5w30 PUP is average moly in that 70ppm range.

Mos2 is the popular liqui moly substitute, they do not have an oil soluble substitute, it is powdered in suspension moly. It has been around forever. So it would be mos2, and they do have a lifter specific additive, I also believe that to be mos2 but I forgot more then I know about it. Their oil soluble EP additive is nextgen but that would be titanium and hard to aquire in the states. Lubegard biotech would be the only wide used oil soluble moly treatment. I'd ask Bob's for this question if you want more info, I'm not sure anyone can say much more here but some have used it with success, mos2 that is.
