Hello fellas, I’m new to the forum. If anyone here can give me answers I would appreciate it.
About 1month ago both battery’s in my 2015 ram tradesman 2500 went dead. Lights came on. It just happened out of the blue. I called dodge and picked up 2 new battery’s put them in and the truck was running as normal up until 2 days ago. The only thing was a sulfer smell not that strong but I was gonna take it in as I was still under warranty . 50k miles
I went to pick up my daughter from school dropped her off at home. Than 5 min later drove the truck to am/pm about a mile away. When I arrived home I parked the truck in my driveway and went inside
Than the nightmare began.
I was in my office about 5 minutes later with my kids and I herd a weird sound outside I looked out the window and at first I thought I was seeing things. There were flames I saw coming from the left rear passenger side wheel well. Not sure if that where the fire started. By the time I ran outside 10 sec with the fire extinguisher the truck was burning so hot there was no putting it out
I just had to call 911 and get my kids to safety. I’m trying to understand what could have caused the truck to go up like it did and so quick. By the time the fire dept got here it was so bad. The fire popped the brakes and it rolled down the driveway hit the fire truck and caught it on fire. It was like a movie seemed unreal.
Does anyone have any insite on what could have caused something like this or herd of any issues with that truck. Or who and how to contact dodge ?
Any help would be appreciated

Wow talk about scary, one thing to be thankful for is that it was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Have no ideas for you, but want to say thanks for sharing and hopefully it will get figured out.

Horror story..glad that nobody got hurt.

Something started that fire.... An electrical short maybe? Could it be an arson? Anyone wishes you bad around that area? Any crazy people around?
Good luck

It’s a pretty nice area, and the middle of the day. Someone would have to be pretty stupid. No issues with anyone that I know of. It went up so fast I have no clue
Fire investigator is looking into everything and they placed it in evidence. Hopefully they can determan the cause

Glad no one was hurt. Thankfully it wasn’t parked in the garage.

The sulfur smell was one or both batteries gassing off hydrogen. Hydrogen is flammable and it probably accumulated under the hood when parked. I'd venture there was something wrong with the charging system, the fact that both batteries went dead all over sudden on a 2015 truck points to that.

As a sidenote, many dealerships will ring up a charging system test when replacing batteries. Sounds like a ripoff and 99.999% of the time it's unnecessary. This might have been one of the 0.001%.

Wow, glad no-one was hurt and your house wasn't badly damaged. Thst is scary stuff for sure. No idea on the cause. Sounds as said something shorted out the batteries and they lit off. I'll be following this and hope the cause is identified.

No doubt your insurance company will figure out the cause. Glad your family wasn't hurt.

I am with the other guy, sounds like the charging system baked the batteries. It is possible the original batteries were just normal over time failures and whomever installed the new batteries, if they messed up and/or did not hook up the intelligent charge sensors that are on the negative side of the battery, the system probably never saw a correct state of charge and just full blast over charged and cooked them.

Downside is that fire may have done enough damage to not be able to determine that 100%

Most likely it wasn't the charging system, that would have triggered a CEL fault while you were driving. May have been an internal short in one of the batteries. The sulphur smell is from the sulphuric acid used in batteries.

I’m thinking they(both batteries)might not have been hooked up correctly. JMHO
