Me and the girlfriend decided to take my ram ecodiesel 4x4 down to the lake today. And well she did fantastic. Water, mud no issues. Until I had just got done going through a large puddle. And the truck displayed "service electronic control" came up. Then shortly after the check engine light was displayed. We stayed at the river and tried to clear the codes by unplugging the battery. Didn't work. Then I thought maybe it needed to regen. So I reved the motor, it had a strong def smell and was blowing white smoke. The truck was on limp mode. We left the river and went to the closest auto zone at the max speed of 30mph. The autozone tech pulled the codes U1424 and p0299 we were able to clear these and was able to drive the truck fine afterwards. The truck was quite wet and muddy in the engine bay. So maybe that caused this? I am unsure. But I'm rather discouraged that I can't off-road with my truck. Since I bought the 4x4 package for this reason. Any suggestions on what happened and maybe a way to prevent this for next time would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like something got wet. check wiring and connections and maybe put some dielectric grease on any connections that look like they might have issues

can't seem to find a list of codes but i believe the first 1 is a communication error which i'd bet is from something getting wet

Should I check the main sensors, like O2 and manifold? Or all the wiring?

finally found the first code which is U1424-IMPLAUSIBLE ENGINE TORQUE SIGNAL RECEIVED. maybe just a little hiccup but not really finding much on what exactly would cause it

as for the second code so far the only matches i have are related to the cummins and seems to be something to do with the turbo. i'm not sure if the ED has a turbo so dunno if it applies here

A sensor or connector got wet most likely. If they don't come back I wouldn't worry about it. New trucks aren't meant to be running through mud holes and water. Just about everything is controlled by a sensor and tied to the computer. You found out the hard way. Its not like 10+ years ago where you could do that and 99% of the time be fine. Just because it's 4wd doesn't mean it's a off-road machine. Its meant to help if you get stuck in average scenarios.

Yes sir the ED does have a turbo. And it's upsetting that I can't off-road this truck because the sensors might get wet. A buddy of mine off roads his 13 tundra with no issues. Any thoughts on how I might seal the sensors up to prevent them from getting wet?

All the connectors have heather seals on them. But a liberal amount of dielectric grease will help a lot

ah i figured it must have since that code actually seems to be used for turbo diesels across a lot of different brands

assuming none of the codes come back anytime soon i'm still going to say something probably got wet. when it comes to water and electrical stuff dielectric grease is your best friend. things are supposed to be sealed pretty well but water always seems to find a way through. i use the stuff on my ATV all the time and it really helps a lot when your playing in water

You have a new truck that threw a couple of codes? Take it to the dealer, let them take a quick look at it and tell you what's up. Go from there. I wouldn't take my truck to AutoZone and trust what they are saying with a brand new $40,000+ diesel, but that's me. I agree you should be able to take it off-road and not worry about it breaking down. I'm interested in the ecodiesel for my next truck. Good luck and keep us posted.

I wouldn't be so quick to say you "can't off road your truck". Splashing through deep mud puddles at high speed and getting all that muddy and sandy water under the hood, as well as the transmission, will always catch up to you sooner or later. Been there a few times but it was always on 80's model trucks. Never quite had the nerve to do the same in a newer truck that I needed everyday and would cost me a lot more to fix. I bought a four wheeler to do just that and even then I had radiator fan and cooling issues after a few months.
