Thank you for your quick response. I think this truck is exactly what I want and I'm researching financing APR's as I have never financed a used vehicle before. I have very good credit, should I expect a really good rate? I'm putting around $15,000 down between trade in and cash. incidentally, Carfax checks out good and it's a 5th gen.

wait for a hemi.. there will be a lot coming off lease due to the deals they had out.. also spring around the corner will be in your favor price wise.. extra cost for the filters and diesel off sets the mpg. and 0 to 80 in my hemi..no upgrades is incredible.

He’s looking at a Pentastar, not an eco diesel.

I love my 4th Gen Pentastar crew. I commute 400mi/wk and every penny saved on fuel is a bonus for me. I like the hemi, but didn’t need it.

Im not sure about the 3.6 in a truck. I'd get a hemi you'll like the power much better.

what’s not to be sure of? it does truck things just the same as the rest of my trucks.EFB0B940-80A8-4D22-AE87-53A5B3CA57F7.jpeg 2B2C26DA-17E7-47C9-9B74-08075F37A7A7.jpeg

A lot people aren’t using their trucks for more than a bag of groceries anyhow it seems.

While I would never trash another man's engine choice, your statement is so true.

I don't tow with mine, but do use it as a truck.

I'm also old enough to have experienced v8 powered trucks that were way less powerful than my 3.6 powered RAM and about half as fuel efficient.

Yessir.

The SBC in my 92 k1500 made a whopping 170hp/255ftlbs

I would definitely recommend the 5.7 HEMI over the 3.6 because;

Gas Mileage difference is negligible
Resale value is significant
V6 engine is not as durable
I think the transmission is not as heavy duty as the V8
AVOID THE ETORQUE ENGINE AND AIR SUSPENSION BECAUSE THE COMPONENTS ARE COSTLY TO REPLACE OUT OF WARRANTY !!! ( I looked into it)
Lastly, AVOID THE 12” infotainment system because they have glitches that haven’t been fixed yet !

Do your research on these statements and then decide ! Don’t take the Cheap Way and then have remorse cause you gonna lose your butt $$$ upgrading to the V8 !!!

you guys know if there is any truth to the rumors that February is Ram Truck Month and deals may improve over January?

Pentastar V6 3.7
As long as you don’t want to tow anything the V6 is fine. Definitely better MPG than the hemi. But being a V6, you may get gouged on future trade in or resale value. At least that’s what happened to me. Had a 2014 1500 with the V6 that I had to upgrade when I had to start hauling 2 horses instead of 1. Got screwed on the trade in cause resale value for a truck that can’t tow anything around here is pretty low.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved my V6 and definitely miss the gas mileage. I’d still have it if it weren’t for the towing issue. Oh yeah, and the new hemi has a quad cab where the V6 was a crew cab. Didn’t think it would be a big deal, but that extra space in the back seat is a major plus and I wouldn’t go back.

All opinions. I get it though, everyone is entitled to have them. The OP said he wants the hemi, so I'm kinda beating a dead horse anyway..

Fuel economy in the dead of winter, without even trying to be fuel efficient is 20-21mpg average fill-up to fill-up with my 3.6 2017 Ram 1500 QC 4x4. There is not a 5.7 equipped late model Ram out there that will do better than ~15mpg with my specific winter time usage. That's a 33% difference. To me, that's not negligible at all.

Resale is relative to the trim level, mileage and condition of the truck more so than 3.6 / 5.7.

Durability? I dunno about that one at all.

8hp45 trans being having less torque handling capability is nill because the pentastar can't exceed the torque rating of the transmission as is.

Hemi 6.4
Don't be shamed into not getting the Pentastar. Plenty of power to scoot around town, on the highway and 3-5000 pounds of towing. Ive had a 5.7 Hemi in a Ram R/T with a limited slip and 3.92 rear and it was a ton of fun. I've had the 6.4 in a Mega Cab 3500 4x4. Man, that thing was a bus. Currently running a Pentastar in a regular cab 4x2 with the 3.5 gearing. All have served their purpose and I've been satisfied with them all. Honestly, I didn't think the 3.6 would be as snappy as it is and I'm very impressed with the power and fuel mileage. You may want to look at Carmax. They normally have a few low mileage Tradesman's to offer. (I'm not affiliated with them in any way.)

5.7 E-torque
Friend of mine bought a Warlock last year with a V6. It is a damn good looking truck. He is very pleased with it. I bought a used 2019 Big Horn with the 5.7 eTorque. Has all the bells and whistles. It was a fleet truck from Enterprise Rental. Have had it several months now and very impressed with it so far. Got to LOVE the Ponies and Torque of the Hemi though. NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you don't have a trade-in to worry about and you don't mind buying ex-rentals, going through Enterprize, Hertz, etc. is the way to go.

I know with Hertz, you can rent the vehicle you're interested in buying for a few days at a reduced rate and if you wind-up buying it, they waive the rental fee.

I've seen 2019 Ram 1500 classics, crew cab, 4x4, 5.7, SLTs for $23-24K through Hertz.

I have yet to buy an ex-rental pickup, but I've bought quite a few other vehicles that were rentals. Never had a problem.

With the V-6 there is a 1,000 lb tow capacity difference between the 3.21 and 3.55 rear axles.

I would never buy a used vehicle from a dealer as I have no way of knowing what service or repairs or re-repairs or maintenance was done on it. Carfax may tell me if the vehicle was in a bad accident and was "totaled" by the insurance company but that is all it will tell me.

If someone has ongoing problems with a lemon they may choose to dump it by using it as a trade-in for another vehicle. It is not coming of a lease as even a short term lease is going to be for 24 months.

Happens every February.

Red
Thanks Red,
I'm planning on going to look at a used '19 this weekend. It has amazed me so far how close in price used '19's are to what they are currently advertising around here for new. In Cleveland area, around 10 grand below sticker for new. Would you anticipate that improving in February? I don't want to buy a used one and then find out I was a grand away from brand new.
