With the V-6 there is a 1,000 lb tow capacity difference between the 3.21 and 3.55 rear axles.

I would never buy a used vehicle from a dealer as I have no way of knowing what service or repairs or re-repairs or maintenance was done on it. Carfax may tell me if the vehicle was in a bad accident and was "totaled" by the insurance company but that is all it will tell me.

If someone has ongoing problems with a lemon they may choose to dump it by using it as a trade-in for another vehicle. It is not coming of a lease as even a short term lease is going to be for 24 months.
Just playing devil's advocate here, but how would you have answers to those concerns if you bought directly from a seller?

While I would never trash another man's engine choice, your statement is so true.

I don't tow with mine, but do use it as a truck.

I'm also old enough to have experienced v8 powered trucks that were way less powerful than my 3.6 powered RAM and about half as fuel efficient.

Remember 4 cyl, tiny damn cars I could barely fit inside, that did not get as good MPG as my Hemi.

I think 2/2 starts any February deals. My new truck is expected to be delivered between 2/3 to 2/17. Did I time that order pretty good!

Very true if who you are buying from is not the original owner. You basically have NO idea on the complete background of the vehicle then.

I guess the only way to mitigate that is buy from an individual who was the original owner. Even with that, CarFax won't give you the whole story. I know I've had minor collision work done on cars in the past and it didn't show up on CarFax.

IMO I still don’t see the point of a V6 in a half ton. The gas mileage is pretty good with a Hemi if your not going to add mods. Why not buy what you want. And Quad vs crew is definitely a life decision. IMO quads looks silly on a ram. Kills the resale/trade value too.

I agree with you on the HEMI--mileage isnt that much difference and you have the power if needed down the road so to speak. I disagree with your opinion on the quad cab though. I think they look sportier than the crew cab- I put the back seats up-lay down the floor and put all my days tools in there-that way I can only take one person with me. LOL As for resale-I had a hard time finding my quad cab with everything i wanted in the truck-so to me it was very desirable. Crew cabs are everywhere-some of us are looking for the quads and will seek them out. My 2cents.

I agree with you---I bought my ram 2yrs old from a dealership with all records of maintenance since brand new. That is the reason i went there in the first place. I want to know that it was serviced properly--you wont get that guarantee from a curb seller.

Agree on all points. I'm a remodeling contractor, and I can tell you for a fact that crew cabs are deemed more difficult to take seriously on a job site than QC's. Very few contractors who are in the market for used trucks are looking for crew cabs. They all want V8 QC's. Not judging anyone, but the QC looks (and is) more like a traditional work truck than a crew cab.

It’s actually more like 3000lbs difference.

Not according to Ram, but then what do they know? Ram shows the V-6 tow capacity as 6400 lbs with the standard 3.21 gears and as 7400 lbs with either the 3.55 or 3.92 gears. This information is very easy to find but you do have to bother to look for it.

Those numbers don't apply to quad cab or crew cab 4x4, pentastar powered Rams. Take over 1000lbs towing capacity off those numbers for QC and CC configurations.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but how would you have answers to those concerns if you bought directly from a seller?

When I sell my vehicles I have a folder that has all the service records and receipts pertaining to the vehicle and this covers oil changes, filter changes, ATF changes, wheel rotations, repairs, and items I have purchased like a car cover or seat covers or shocks or sway bar. I also include a sheet that has my maintenance log of mileage when work was done on the vehicle. For a $50,000 car or truck I find this worth my time. If I was dealing with a lawnmower then I would not bother.

If I am paying tens of thousands of dollars for a used car and truck I prefer to go with private parties who have the service records for the vehicle. If they have neglected the maintenance then I am more likely to get stuck with the tab for engine or transmission or other repairs.

The V-8 engine adds $1500 to $1700 to the price of a truck and so I would expect the resale to be higher than for a truck with the V-6. A crew cab adds more than $2600 to the price for a truck as even the bucket seats on a crew cab cost $500 more than on a quad cab - go figure.

Where I live 95% of the trucks that the dealers order are crew cabs. It is part due to the much higher profit for the dealer and partly the demand for the crew cabs. I know many contractors who buy crew cabs so they can take their guys to a job and so they can use the truck on the weekends and on vacations for their family. I prefer the quad cab to get the shorter wheelbase and overall length, but even the few that are on dealers' lots tend to have the short 5'7" box and so I will need to special order truck.

Interesting, I've never seen a QC with the short bed. Didn't even know that existed. That is nowhere to be found on dealer lots here in Greater Cleveland, Ohio. Most dealer inventory here is around 60/40 favoring CC.

Never seen a quad cab with a 5.7 don’t know they even exist.? Still don’t understand a v6 in a half ton either. Hey they make v6 mustangs and automatic vettes too but to each is own.
