Here’s an update: I called Ram Care and was assigned to two different specialists. Neither one answered their phones nor returned my calls or emails.

I know a guy who has connections within Stellantis. He called his contact and a part was sent several days later. It was unfortunate I had to pursue a back channel to the get the service I needed. Most people can’t do that.

As my truck got fixed the end of last week, the dealership asked me if I wanted any other service work done. I asked them to change out my fuel filters and give me an oil change. I figured I’d pay a little extra having them do it. Man was I wrong!!!!!!!

I’ve done the last several oil and fuel filter changes myself, using cummins diesel approved filters. Here was my last do it yourself cost……I used a mopar oil filter which cost me $15 on sale and an OEM approved fuel filter and water separator filter set for $79.99. The full synthetic motor oil cost me $89.99. My all in do it yourself parts cost was $184.98. To do both changes myself, it took one hour.

Hold on to your hat…….the dealership charged me, all in, $855.53 for parts and labor. They charged $320.18 for the fuel filters (that I paid $79.99 for), $218.97 for the oil and engine filters (that I paid ($104.99 for), and $239.83 in labor (which isn’t bad because it took me an hour to do it myself previously).

In summary, my do it yourself cost was $184.98 plus an hour of my time. The dealership cost was $855.53.

I literally felt like I was just mugged on the street. Note to self, other than warranty work, do NOT go to a Ram dealership for any other service work if you can do it yourself!!

YES…on #2 for certain!

When my local dealer told me the transmission tailshaft seal was “backordered” and expected a Six-Week delivery schedule…. I called another dealer 50 miles away who had advertised OnLine they had TEN of them for sale at retail. ($65)

I told the local warranty-dealer who “explained” that “Warranty” parts MUST come thru the “Warranty network”…. that if I purchased the part locally I WOULD HAVE TO COVER THE REPAIR PARTS AND LABOR…

Since they’d had the truck for Two Weeks by now….I decided to go pick it up and FIX IT MYSELF!

I ordered one and had it in 2 days …. and WHADDYA KNOW! … Suddenly the local dealer had the part inside the Same TWO days and called to announce the truck was ready.

I’m Convinced that warranty parts are “backordered” so dealers can make FULL RETAIL repair jobs…. while Warranty Claims are put on the back-burner because the dealership doesn’t make full Labor OR Parts Prices on Warranty work.

And taking the truck to a different dealer restarts the warranty authorization process all over again...

You kind of walked yourself into that mess having them do the extra service work and not getting an estimate upfront. Dealerships are not charities and cannot compete with your lower overhead doing it at home or having a "bud" help you.

After conversing with my local parts manager, here is some additional information and clarification on backordered parts.

A backordered part may be cancelled by the dealer if it has not been shipped. Once it is shipped to the dealer it must go to dealer stock, it cannot be returned as a single item.

Dealers can bulk return parts on a prorated basis, meaning they generally do not receive the full credit of dealer cost. Dealers pay the shipping.

The amount of credit (percentage of value) a dealer receives on returned parts is based on a number of metrics, including monthly/yearly parts orders, number of past returns (number & value), where the part was originally *sourced, dealer customer satisfaction rating, and others.

*A dealer cannot return parts sourced from another dealer since the part was never invoiced to that dealer in the first place.

Sourcing can be from regional distribution centers, main distribution centers, factory (very, very rare), or directly from an OEM supplier (Emergency order, Vehicle down situations).

I have a ram 2500 Cummins diesel that is a year and a half old. I’ve needed two repairs so far. The first repair I needed required part that Stellantis said was on backorder and I waited three months for it.
My current issue is I need a turbo actuator due to a turbo Sub boost error that keeps occurring.

I’ve prepaid nearly $15,000 in expenses for a month long trip to glacier Park Montana. I also have a trip to Wisconsin that is coming up very soon.

How can you sell a nearly $110,000 truck and then continuously not have parts to service your vehicles being sold? Are they discontinuing the product line due to a shortage of of parts in their assembly lines? The answer is no. So, why are they not able to provide a turbo actuator in a timely manner?

I run the risk of an entire summer’s worth of travel being halted due to Stellantis not having parts. I’ve purchased two ram limited trucks within an 18 month period of time and Have talked two of my buddies into both purchasing ram Limited trucks. If my problem is not solved within the next two weeks, I will dump my ram and move to another product line through GMC, Chevy, or Ford and will never go back to ram.
So this is not just a Stellantis issue. I work for a Cadillac/GMC dealership and they have the very same supply chain issues. It is beyond belief that we are still fighting this issue. The icing on the cake is the horrible quality control in the manufacturing of the parts to begin with!
