Yeah I know but I have always had that thinking that AB can get cleaner, but all the literature I have read in past couple of years says its the same.

Right most of the door being blown off was just for dramatic effect. I was however very light with the gain on my last amp so doubling power isn't out of the question at all. I had about 40w rms going to speakers with last amp.

Yea, not anymore, Class D full range amps are pretty common.
It's like the old debate of regualated, and non-regulated power supplies. :)

Yeah great thing about car audio everyone has opinions about these things but till you go and compare for yourself it doesn't mean much lol. I plan to compare anything and everthing I can when it comes to some of these myths.

So you set your gains with test tones and a DMM to come up with 40 watts?

Class D is great for low draw against the cars electrical system and can sound very good. I prefer AB but that's just because I can't find anything in pure class A that I like. I've never noticed a difference with PA drivers like yours but higher end speakers can be a little more finicky. AB rules the high end market for a reason.

Very good point with hearing the difference with the PA drivers, but right now I am in a better position to play with mid level equipment rather than top end. I would love nothing more than to use a couple of Mosconi or Audison amps and Illusion audio's speakers and subs to build something out of this world, but really think it is better money spent if I learn install tricks and tuning for a mid level system.

Well I since we are on install and tuning I will be doing a budget build in my wifes 2013 Ford Fusion and will be trying out a product called MINIdsp. I figured if I can get that to work with so many tuning parameters I should be able to use the car audio ones designed to be a little easier and cost 3x as much.

From reading all of the comments I definitely feel like you know a whole lot more about car audio than I do, but I wanted to tell you I'm really impressed with my MRX series Alpine amp. I could only imagine how awesome their PDX line would be. Just something I thought I'd throw out there.

Thanks for the recommendation PX8. They are good line of amps but right now I know there are a a bunch of SQ guys getting odd noises out the the Alpine amps. So all in all I've used them in the past liked them but I will stay away until kinks are worked out of the newer lines.

Ok got the amp in last night and man talk about little guy for such a power house. It is sitting under my drivers seat at the moment since my better half made some plans for us that I didn't know about so pics of install just aren't going to happen. Ok now on to the initial thoughts.

1. Gains are setup in a 1,2 channel and 3,4 channel. This was a bit odd to me since the sk85.4 was setup as a 1,3 and 2,4, so I had to switch RCA's and speakers around a bit.

2. It is small and I mean small for the power. It is literally half the size of the SK85.4 where that one I had to finagle in and out from under the seat, this one not a problem at all.

3. Fit and finish of the amp is everything you would expect from a $400.00+ amp. Flat black which I love but does show the oil off your fingers pretty easily. Everything is marked clearly and no signs of markings being rubbed off like some of the old equipment we have all used in the past.

4. Xovers- this is kinda neat there is a 1x-10x switch that allow you to use the same xover for sub frequencies and high frequencies. Not sure how many other amps do that but I thought it was cool since its the first time I have gotten to see it.

5. Wiring- Now if you have actual 4 awg wire like I do it doesn't all fit into the 4awg power and ground, seemed little goofy might just have to spend more time with wire management to get it all to fit. Speaker wire, it handled my 12awg no problems at all and looks like you could almost get 8awg in the terminals. Terminal, they are great easy screw in and out allens with no signs that I would ever be able to strip them out with the supplied allen wrench.

6. Sound- Now this was interesting to me, I set the gains and haven't changed my xover points in my headunit but after listening to it for a few minutes last night it seems that it has brought the highs out in my system. So there will need to be a tuning session here soon. The mids were incredible sounding from low volume all the way up to where it can make your ears bleed. They sounded much more full at lower volumes and even with the extra power they held their composure in the higher volume range. I don't know if I will be adjusting them much but we will see.

At this time I am pretty happy with the amplifier and for short listening period I can say that I will be keeping this one for the foreseeable future. Pics are coming I have to transfer them from my dumb-phone to my computer. Thanks for reading guys. I will have more in the future with what I am going to do with my substage.

Awesome man...enjoy it for a while before making a lot of changes...
when my highs are bright (especially at high volume) a like to run a 24db slope versus 12db.
try it out....you may like it

Tomorrow night I will start with changing filter and see what happens there. After that if its not sounding right I will probably cut the levels down and retune from there.

In order: set gains correctly, set crossover points and slopes, set time alignment, level match and EQ last.

If you try to do any EQing or levels before the rest you'll just be spinning your wheels. Ideally you do all the first things and no EQ is needed, that's very rare though.

Yeah I think I've only heard once of a guy swapping in an amp and didn't have to do anything at all when equing.

Ok so after getting an initial tune done I was surprised I didn't have to change much from being flat. I did have to bring the tweeter level down a bit since they are in the dash and very bright being PA equipment.
Now now little addjustments here and there should do it and ill be set till I get a wild hair and change things. Oh and speaking of changing I have come to realize I miss regular speakers instead of having PA. Just did an install in a buddies Tacoma and just the effortless way the Alpines mids played deep and tweets were very smooth to the ears made me want to switch mine out that day. So keep a look out I will be finding a mid range set of comps and running them active.
