This evening put the truck in reverse. Display went dark, except for guide lines. Back to drive, and then reverse. 2x or 3x - same deal, then back to normal. Nothing obstructing lens - no explanation. Thoughts?

Bad camera or water in the tailgate harness.

On a side note, your failure is really exciting for me. I installed an aftermarket backup camera and lost my grid lines. I discovered the grid lines are a function of the camera, not of the radio. Your failure tells me that if I make a harness that tees off and goes to the factory camera, stashed and hidden somewhere, as long as it’s communicating with the radio it *should* send a signal back to the truck and my grid lines should come back, but the video will still be pulled from my aftermarket camera.

Sorry to hijack your thread, you can go about your business now lol

See if after a couple of ignition on / off cycles it comes back. Mine did something similar, but never went totally black. It would get fuzzy or only display what can best be described as static. The fact that you have lines probably means a connection issue and not a dead camera.

Ends up that the camera harness connection is a weak point. The fix is really simple. Open the tailgate and remove the access panel for the latch. You will see some bolts holding the latch assembly. Loosen those and take the latch out. No need to take off the cables, just enough to get the latch out of the cavity so you have room. I have big hands... LOL. Unplug the camera. Clean both sides well with electronic cleaner. Add dielectric grease to the connection to assist with sealing out moisture and reconnect. I then carefully wrapped the connection with electrical tape, leaving a folded over tab to be able to easily remove in the future if needed. Replace the latch and button it up. Took me about 15 minutes to do, and two years later... no problems.

If that doesn't fix the issue, if it was me I would just replace the camera at that point.

I don't know how many connect points there are between the head unit and the tailgate, but while the tailgate connection is more likely, it could be any of them. There could also be damage to the cable somewhere in between.

Hi @FriedDumpling --

I'm sorry about the inconveniences you're currently having with your back-up camera. Were you able to get this resolved? If not, please feel free to send us a private message and we can investigate further.

Thanks,

I had problems with my camera and sensors. Wound up being a loose connection on the large 54 pin connector that lives behind the left front wheel well liner. And while you are in there check the harness where it runs around the left front cab mount. Found a chaffed through wire that powered my trailer lights.

There are 3 connections that i know of,

One at the camera, that was just explained
Another at the bottom of the tailgate
One more near the drivers side rear wheel, where the frame almost touches the spare tire
