As far as power and ease of pulling not much difference. My half ton hauled our trailer easily.

The only benefit is the added stability with the bigger truck.

The biggest 1500 is still 600# lighter, than the smallest 2500 and the biggest 1500 is still 2,000# lighter than the biggest 2500. .. it makes sense you don't see huge power increase.

Let not under play the safety factor of the stability...I see way to many sketchy half tons swaying on the highway.

I take it you are agreeing with me.

If he don’t plan on a larger trailer he will be ok if he drives with common sense and sets up his rig appropriately.

If you have plans for a larger trailer in the future but the bigger truck now. You will be buying one regardless might as well have a safety margin now.

More greatness here, guys...yep, this discussion for me is starting to sound like the ones for bigger tractors or gun safes; in other words, you'll need a bigger one anyway!

Thanks for making my decision even harder...and just when I thought my mind was made up to keep the Reb.

I also had a 2013 Silverado 1500 5.3 and towed a 20’ enclosed trailer loaded with construction tools. Weighs 7500lbs. It was all that truck could do!! I upgraded to a 2014 ram 2500 6.4 and it doesn’t even know it’s back there! It truely is unreal the jump in power, stability and ride when towing!

No way I could ever go back to a 1500.
The 2500 is just so much more truck in every way. And dollar for dollar a much better deal if you want meat and potatoes. Lotta guys buy a 1500 and then dump tons of money on lifts and suspension upgrades and such when it costs you just as much if not more than if you just bought the 2500.

It all has to do with what you use the truck for. I have both, and they both work very well at what I use them for.

As far as price goes its almost irrelevant. Some half tons cost $20k more than a 3/4 ton.

Yep! This exactly! I'm a simple country hick so i got me a 2500 tradesmen. Plenty fancy enough for me. I'd rather spend my money on engine, suspension, frame and steering components...but to each their own of course.

I have a 2009 1500 TRX4 5.7L with no mods.
I tow a trailer and while I am within the weight class for my truck I want a little more power and little more beefed up suspension. I was considering going to a 2500 but it’s likely going to cost me about 10-12 grand between what I have and even then it'll have have more miles that I have on mine. The other option is to the beef up suspension, get some torque and horsepower but at what cost and is it worth it

I have been just trying to weigh the options of spending *** on upgrades versus just upgrading the truck itself. I’m also wanting to stay in the 4th GEN 2009 and up models if possible but looks like 2007-2008 have same diesel as 2009.

I’ve looked at Fords as well but weary of the diesels prior to 2011 is that outs them out of price range as.

Thanks for any suggestion.
My ? is how many miles are you towing each year and under what terrain conditions? Your truck is stout enough with the WDH set up properly and if there is too much sag air bags should fix it. Now if your towing a lot and in mountains it might be worth the cost for a 6.4 2500 upgrade. If your towing short distances of a few hours and not every week I would opt to add the air bags and save a lot of money.
