Hello all,
I have 08' ram 2WD automatic with the 5.7 Hemi with a little over 254,000 miles on it. I do get a slight ticking from the engine and has been like that for some time now which I believe is a result of the lifters going bad.

I'm feel that I'm mechanically inclined to R&R the lifters however I wanted to chime in and ask for any opinions on the difficulty level from 1-10?

Another option is, would it be wise to replace the lifters or would you just leave it alone and wait for the engine to give out and then replace it with a remanufacture one?

Thanks for your time.

Drive it tell it dies, changing lifters is not an easy task and with parts and such its gonna set u back $$ wise since it has all that valve timing crap on it and stuff.

I would wait tell it dies and either get another engine from a junk yard or dont bother fixing it at all. I'm not sure the condition ur truck is in but it's an 08 and they can be had for super cheap.

Replacing lifters will need u to take the head apart change head gasket adding NEW bolts for the head and everything else u take apart and along when u remove the lifters ull need to also replace the lifter seals o would say for the amount of time its gonna take u to do all that work it's the same time will trade for an engine swap

If I have lifter or head gasket failure I just do a major overhaul while it is down or replace engine.Too much labor to do either fix on a high mileage motor

Thank you for your input gents. The truck, I think, is in great condition and I dont plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. I recently installed a new tranny and torque converter along with new driveline and joints. So I too feel that waiting until the engine dies is the best option and then install a rebuilt/overhauled engine at that time from either Jasper or etc.

That would be ur best bet best of luck!

Also if u got a lifter tick its prob not that big of a deal, u can take ur valve covers off and see if the lifter seaters are a bit loose but its a long shot but won't hurt to look inside and check everything over. Valve cover gaskets are on the cheaper side of things and over time they tend to start leaking
