rim backspacing question

I am looking at getting some new pro comp rims soon. They are 17x9 with -6 backspacing. Just wondering how far they would stick out from the truck. Would rims with 0 backspacing be flush with the truck? I would like to add some 2500 fender flares and I would like them to be about flush with them.

what size tires are you looking at? thats going to effect how far past the fender its going to stick out.

All depends on how wide of a tire you are mounting - my factory 20" wheels have a +19mm offset and my tires stick out a little. Going towards a 0 or negative offset from the factory wheel will push them out, but again maybe only an inch or so.

I'm pretty that's 6" backspacing. Backspacing does not go into negative.
Now are you talking about offset? They do go into the negatives.

But if its a 9" wide with 6" backspacing. It's going to sit almost the same as stock, actually in 5MM.

I really think you are talking wheels offset not backspacing.

Tires have nothing to do with how far they will stick out. It's the rim that determines that.

Yeah, you put a 305 tire on a 9" wide rim it's going bulge, but it won't be sticking out any farther than a 255 tire.

Agree with some of what blowngp said. The -6 is almost certainly referring to offset. I disagree that width of a tire doesn't effect how much it pokes out. If you have a 10 inch wide tire vs a 12 inch wide tire the 12 will stick out an inch more per side if the tire is wider than the rim.
Here's mine with 12.5 inch wide tire on 17x9 -13 offset wheels. The 315 will be damn near the same width as these tires. -13 vs the -6 you're looking at is a 1/4 inch difference so would look pretty similar to mine.
On a side note, I should have gone with 315/70/17 or 35/12.5/17 tires.

yes it does. a 12" tire on a 9" wheel is going to be overall wider (which means its going to stick out more) then a 10" tire on a 9" wheel. if your trying to get the tires even with the fender flares, this matters.

I see what your saying, guess me coming from the car world putting wide tires is not going to make stick out as much. They will bulge but I see where a/t tires will sit way past the rim width.

295 tire on a 9" rim with -12 offset. Very close to the setup your looking at. Stuck out about 1.5" past the fender. Maybe a tad more. I don't exactly remember. Oem flares are 3/4" wide. Zero offset wheel would get you close to flush, but still poke out past the flare a tad.
