I love how all of you are siding with the dealership, he bought 6 vehicles there so I don't think he is out of line on this issue. If I had more interest I would search and see how many of you have bashed dealerships in the past.
So do you assume or ask upfront if there is going to be some type of frequent customer discount? Think the OP assumed and that was poor planning on his part.

I don't like having a dealership do repairs on a vehicle and have had several issues in the past. Independent shops are usually a lot cheaper, and I do the majority of the work myself. But in the end nobody is forcing the person to go to the dealership and they should know what the cost is up front. Not like you go to a dentist claiming you have a toothache so must be an issue, but the dentist doesn't find anything wrong so now you don't want to pay for the appointment.

I'm not siding with the dealership at all. I just think OP feels it was a rip off due to the price of the part itself, but instead he needs to see it as the price of the dealer updating the computer (regardless of why they're updating it). The dealer's time/cost is completely independent of what he paid for the part.

I enjoy the people who walk into our historic carriage museum and are shocked we charge admission.......they are ususally holding an $8 cup of coffee and think museums should be free.
People are crazy. I own a successful niche consulting business and people are always trying to nickle and dime me. I always tell them they are free to do it on their own and save my fee.

Who do you think pays for the 100 salaries, health care, 401k, maternity leave, utilities, property tax, general upkeep such as pavement, and profit plus many things I havent said but are needed to stay open. Oh wait you think the auto manu gives them enough profit on new vehicles to pay that freight, lol. Yes, I am definitely on the dealers side as far as pricing, which is also why I use them as little as I possibly can. It will not be that long before we see many manu's go belly up because they cant charge enough to stay in business and keep up with gov't demands. Manu's have stated they expect to lose 3 billion thanks to EV mandates, mind you this is just in one year and one manu. Again, who is supposed to pay? Tax payers? The dealership, lol? The auto manu? Or the person who uses their service?

This thread reminds me that I have to make an appointment at the dealer for an oil change and tire rotation soon.

If you look at YouTube, many Ram owners buy products Online, then install the product themselves.
Then drive to the dealership to get the part Programmed into the Ram.

The dealership has a lesser fee when a customer does that

Another thing that a Ram owner can do,
If you know, that you are going to install parts, like:
Brake Controller
Power Folding Mirrors
or other parts that will need programming,

That customer can get several things programmed in at once, for a lesser price
