I feel a bit like an :idiot: asking this but here we go :

Can anyone tell me what is and if there is a difference between them. Is it the way they attach to the truck, the material they are made of? The shape they have doesn't seem to change the name besides this : if they are not tubes, they are all named running boards. However some running boards are in fact tubes...

I have tried looking at them to figure it out to no avail so if anyone can shed some light I'd be very happy.

For Dodge trucks they are called Nerf Bars and most are tubular in shape. Running boards are usually flat. Nerf Bars can be made of Steel, Aluminum, or heavy plastic. Steel ones are usually powder coated, Aluminum can be powder coated or polished to a bright shine, also chrome plated. The plastic Dodge ones are molded in black. I have the factory black plastic ones that look like Aluminum. Very strong with a flat area for a step, in my case two steps each side for my quad cab. Hope this helps with your question.

Thank's Harrold, I figured as much from what I could find but wasn't sure between the Nerf and step bar.

I have what I think are OEM nerf bars chrome finish with Plastic inserts for step in the truck. They will get the flat black Plasti-Dip treatment in the spring as will my rear bumper.
