I appreciate that advice, but it's not that I'm a worry wart. Just trying to make a smart purchase is all.

You could research GMC/Chevy and find they all have their own issues. Same with Ford, I read that the internal water pump fails and takes out the engine. That's the ecoboost engine. I don't know anything about Toyota or Nissan.

If it is a slightly used ram, buy an extended warranty to ease your mind. All mfgs have their issues.

j have never heard of waiting for repair for 8 months before. especially since the engine is still being manufactured for new vehicles. you would hope for better support than that

I could do that, but I'm not even interested in those trucks, so I didn't really research those.

Huntergreens point was all have issues so pick one that looks & drives good and get your best deal & buy it.

I know, but "they all have issues" implies I'm looking for something with no issues. That would be unrealistic. I'm simply trying to avoid something that is an expensive known and prevalent issue.

Every car has its’ issues. Yes, this issue can be expensive, but if it happens have the mechanic replace all of them at once with a stronger bolt so it doesn’t happen again. I have 63000 on my 2013 Ram 1500 and I don’t have any issues. I say, if you like the Ram buy it and enjoy it and worry about the exhaust bolts if or when they happen. I’m enjoying my truck and I would buy it again if I had the same choice. If you want to play it safe replace the manifold bolts before they break or have the history checked to see if they’ve already been placed.

I had an '02 Dakota 4.7 they were known for breaking manifold bolts too, so I replaced with Gibson Ceramic coated headers at about 60,000 miles had 252,500 miles when I wrecked it and never had the issue. Bought my 2010 Ram used with 94,000 miles and noticed a slight tick sound when cold, picked up BBK shorty Headers and had them installed ($100 labor charge) had 1 broken bolt. With the new upgraded bolts with the headers don't expect any problems with broken bolts. P.S. now have 136,000 miles no issues

My opinion, for what it's worth, is the possibility exists for you to have the broken bolt exhaust. Not a 100% certainty. I have heard the 1500.00 dollars to repair at dealers. Haven't had the issue so I can't say how accurate this price is. You could also have a hemi that will drop a lifter and take out the camshaft. Should you avoid the hemi ? Your call. The V6 pentastar seems to be a reliable engine so don't overlook trucks with this engine. I had these issues in mind sand still went with the hemi. This is my fourth ram and have yet to have a major issue. Hope this helps.

Thank you. Any feedback and real world experience helps. I'm leaning toward the V6 because of that reliability. I'm not as worried about the hemi problems of broken bolts as I was when I started this thread. It's fairly cheap fix and not catastrophic . But that valve problem......I know not all have it, it's a small percentage, but there's enough out there to make me take notice and be nervous.

Didn't know you were looking at the pentastar. I havev15 wranglercwith 54000 miles. Not one issue. Wifey drives a 16 Cherokee with thev3.2 pentastar, 65000 miles, again no issues. Both owned since new. Imho, the bestcsix cylinders engine currently on the market.

Pentastars have their own high mileage issues. It’s similar to the hemi. Bearings in the rocker arms start to stick/seize and wear out the cam lobes. Lifters also have some issues. It’s honestly about as frequent as the hemi.

As a FCA tech I would get the hemi every time.

Is that right? Wow, I'm not finding anything negative about the pentastar at high mileage. Can you provide any links to some of them? And how many miles are you calling "high mileage"?

I don’t have any links, it’s based off what issues I see coming in the shop.
