Yes, it's July. Buying snow chains in July, I know, I know...

Just want to get this bit out of the way so I don't have to scramble come November and end up paying a fortune for the things, so...

2017 4x4, stock wheels and tires (P 265/70R17 ), and I'm trying to find a set of snow chains for them online. Been to like seven different sites, and no joy.

Anyone got any hints as to where a guy can get a set of decent chains for stock tires?

Always made my own. Then you can put as many cross links in as you want. The more cross links the smoother the ride.

You would think that since your tire size is just a smidge larger than a 31x10.50 there would be a decent selection. When I drove OTR, I had these nifty braided cable ones, but my brain isnt pulling the brand...I wanna say “Kobra” for some reason... Best of luck

I have a set of TRYGG tire chains for mine IMHO the best ones on the market. Try industrial suppliers as that's where I usually get mine ordered from. They'll have a full cross reference chart. A lot of them are only listed as a couple sizes, but cross over to a lot more.

3 cams on them to make it easier to keep them tight and canV pattern with square nubs. Also worth grabbing an ammo box to store them in.

Remember to drive slow when you are chained up... you could probably get by with a set of Z cables. Also you will prolly run a different tire than stock once they get wore out and that tire may be a little larger due to a better tread design. Keep that in mind before you go drop some money on tire chains.

So I have lived in Alaska for over 20 years and never once needed chains on my 4x4 trucks. I've been through some pretty deep snow and always just slowed down on the ice. Only used studs one year and found the advantage of the studs wasn't enough to pay to have a spare set of tires/rims or to have them remounted every year. That being said, I run fairly aggressive tires and stock tires might be a different story. Are you needing these in Oregon, or do you have someplace you're going that's exceptionally bad? Just curious.

They're also pretty helpful on slick muddy roads. I drive an a few that are solid enough, but as soon as they get wet there's very little traction and corners going downhill can be a bit white knuckle no matter how slow you go. Throw on a set of chains and you're a lot better off. Pretty much all the big trucks where I work chain up when it rains.

Yeah, me too. I lived in Colorado for little over 30 years and really the only time I ever needed chains was on the few little 2WD mini trucks I had but all the 4WD’s I had, just a good set of all-terrain tires, and about 4-5 bags of the ole reliable Tube Sand they sold at Home Depot thrown in the bed, I was good to go.

Now, when I used to work as a compressor mechanic out in the gas patch years ago, you had to throw chains every day after you left the main road and leave them on there all day until you got back to the main road at the end of the day, or you’d just be getting stuck all day irregardless of the fact you had on the old school BFG mudders or not because the roads would just get so muddy and rutted our from all the bobtail water trucks runnin’ up and down them all day long.

But other than that, if you didn’t have roads like that to drive on, I don’t know why anyone with a four wheel drive and good tires would need chains. Even over the passes, the chain laws only applied to trucks, unless you were two-wheelin’.

Told my boss once that I'd never chain up to come to work. The only time I ever chained up was for something extremely important---deer hunting!!!! :D

I'd be fine without them myself, but unfortunately? The People's Democratic Republic of Oregon requires them on certain roads and under certain weather conditions. Since I live in a mountain range and I'm literally surrounded by roads (with passes) that require chains under ice/snow conditions, I kind of need them to get to the office, get groceries, go visit anyone, etc.

I can get out of having chains if I kept a set of studded snow tires, but that requires four tires (and a set of wheels/rims, or having my tires re-mounted 2x a year to swap back and forth.)

I'm more than used to driving with them when I have to; anything faster than 20mph in a car would be a guaranteed method of destroying one's fender after a couple of miles, so I wouldn't dare pull that stunt in a truck...

Hah! I love it! The PDRO... I lived in Depoe Bay, Newport and Salem Oregon for some years before heading north to Alaska. We're in the process of moving back south here in a month or so, but after getting my ass taxed off in Oregon, we're gonna stop short in Washington and live on the Columbia. That 9.9% state income tax can be better spent on mods. We can still visit all the fam on the OR side, but won't be subject to some of those pesky taxes and crazy rules. Although the gun laws in Wa are a little stricter than Alaska so I'll have to get used to that. I haven't really looked at where OR is now a days on gun laws.

If that ends up being Longview or thereabouts, you'll be in my neighborhood (Longview has the closest Lowes/Home Depot/etc. to me.)

It's a trade-off... I actually save money on sales tax (and any shopping I do in WA only requires me to show my Driver's License to avoid coughing up there.)

I haven't really looked at where OR is now a days on gun laws.

Way better than WA, but slowly creeping in that direction :/

My f150 work truck never gets chains... it’s got so much crap in it it weighs as much as a 3/4 ton so it always hooks. My bucket truck on the other hand always gets the fronts chained in the snow... the problem is getting that fat pig to stop and turn lol
