I've been through many different types of exhausts and wanted to try something a little different. I had a Summit 3" exhaust with one of their crimped turbo mufflers. Less than a year later something came lose inside and it was rattling like mad.
The crimped turbo was pretty quiet overall. Louder than stock, but not as loud as a Flowmaster super 40. If the stock muffler was a 1 and the flowmaster is a 10 then the crimped turbo was a 2. I was torn between wanting something louder and not. So I did both.
I'm not a fan of open exhausts on stock, low compression engines, so instead of just a simple cutout I added a small Dynomax race bullet muffler in front of the cutout and a welded turbo behind. The race bullet has one 3" ID and one 3" OD end. I slid the ID end into the "bell" of the cutout. On the other end of the cutout I cut the "bell" or flair off and slid it into the welded turbo. I wanted it to be as compact as I could.
For those that are curious, the Welded turbo is an Afterburner turbo. I've used those before and it's the same down to the paint they use. The welded muffler, the chambered one, is the original flowmaster 40 series. For those looking to save a little money and who want to get an idea of the sound.
The race bullet with the stock 4.7 and stock Y pipe has a nice deep rumble at idle with a nice mid-range upon acceleration. In tow-haul with engine braking there's a good decel pop. There's some drone, but I'm also dumping it under the truck. For someone who wants a loud, deep tone this is a good choice. It's a little louder than a flowmaster 44. It now goes to 11...
With the cutout closed it's only a very small touch louder than the crimped turbo. I'd say a 3 on my scale above. It's got a good sound. I suspect without the race bullet it still wouldn't be as loud as a Flowmaster 40 or even the two chamber 44.
I'm extremely pleased and will likely add an electronic valve so I can open and close it on demand.
