Do any of you put a lubricant on the spare tire cable? If so, what do you use?

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that if you were to simply spray it with some WD40 you'd be ahead of 99.95% of the other vehicle owners in the country.

I thought of WD-40, but I'm sure it'll attract dust and dirt pretty good. Now that you mention it, I think WD-40 makes a dry lube. Maybe I'll give that a whirl.

Maintenance would be a good idea for these.

maybe lower down, spray some lube at least once a year?

Last year I tried to lower the spare on my daughters truck and it would only come down a few inches, had a helluva time getting it down. I tried every YouTube trick I could find but nothing worked. Luckily it lowered enough so I could cut the cable. That part was over $100 too.

If you find some good lube for this let us know.

On my old F150 it rusted in place and had to cut the cable to get the spare off. After I bought a new one I made sure I soaked it in Fluid Film inside and out every year and it never happened again. I am going to drop the doughnut spare that came on my truck and replace it with a full size spare soon and when I do I am going to soak it with Fluid Film unless the guy at Krown got it good when I had my truck in there in September.
