speedometer quit

My speedometer randomly quit working as I was going down the road, wondering what could be the problem

Sensor or instrument cluster. I would do the sensor first as its much easier.

Like Dapepper said, try replacing the sensor on the transfer case first, make sure you get a part from a reputable store, or at least get one with a decent warrenty. When mine went out I went through three sensors until I found one that worked.

Before that you can try a cluster self test. Hold the trip/reset button on the cluster with the key off, then turn the key on but do not start the truck. When the Odometer flashes the word Check, you can release the button. Then all the guages will cycle in a test, that will quickly rule out an IC issue.

Thats a useful tip I never new about the cluster test.
