Couple weeks, my steering controls on the left side of my steering wheel stopping working. I noticed at night, the lights on both sides of the controls were going on and off as I turned the wheel. Thought I was going crazy. Horn, radio controls on both sides, instrument cluster buttons, heated steering wheel and voice control don't work. Oddly enough the cruise controls still work.

I've brought it to the dealer (should have come here first). They fixed a wire that didn't look right. Everything worked, then while it was still at the dealer the tech said it stopped working. Next day the ordered in a new module. Same thing, started working then stopped. Now they want to change another module that is sealed and can't be tested. I'm in it for $372 so far. It's another $409 for this last module and $200 for labor.

I'm holding off for now on this potential fix.

Anybody else run into this situation.

Sounds like a clockspring but just a guess.

Clock Spring is what I thought of.

Here is a pic of the invoice. Not sure what a clock spring is.

There was a recall for the harness that controls all of these things years ago. Was it performed? If not and one of the wires was damaged that may be your problem.

All recalls have been performed over the years. Not sure if this was one of them.

I am having this same exact intermittent problem. It started after the dealer corrected the open recalls on my truck. When the controls stop working on the steering wheel, my power steering also becomes sluggish. The only controls that work on my steering wheel is the cruise controls. Has anyone for sure identified the corrective action on this?

Hi Jeff Muether,
We’re sorry to hear about this. We certainly understand how concerning this may be. Please send us a private message if you decide to return to the dealer so we can have this documented and provide you with additional assistance.

Replaced the clock spring, no change to my problem. Still no power steering, no audio controls, no instument menu controls and no horn. Every once in a while everything will just start working but not for long.

There is a very fragile harness that controls all of those things. If you don't have steering wheel controls, you can buy that kit which comes with a new harness and install it. This way you get an upgrade at the same time.

I have my old harness (no media controls) I'd send to you for free if you wanted to try the repair yourself. You pay shipping.

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but there is also a recall on the harness in earlier fourth generation Rams. My 2014 Ram was impacted by it and the harness I mention gets something added to stop it from breaking/shorting.

It is possible however this is not your problem though...

I have had similar problems on my 2011 Dodge Ram. Luckily it was under warranty until this year. Had it back there over 12 times. Always the left radio control buttons. I have had steering wheel buttons replaced 4-5 times. People have been complaining about the TIPM(fuse box) forever. So they replaced that and the whole harness in the truck. That solved it for a while. But it’s doing it again. I ran into a vehicle electrical guru. He said after all that it is either a connection from the TIPM to truck or the click spring. I still don’t know. Real pain in the ass. If you figure it out let me know.

Do you have a link to this harness? I have a 14 that CC stopped working, it used to be intermittent but it hasnt worked in over a year now. I airbag off and checked the switch and connections and everything seemed okay, lights on switch work so it has some power but i know switches can be finiky.

Do you know the location of the particular harness that you are referring to?

Thanks :)

So, sorta old thread.

But my 2009 seems to have the same issues.

Dome lights don't come when you open doors or when you remote lock/unlock the truck.
Steering controls don't work, can't control the evic or radio.
No horn
Then all the buttons on the center dash don't work. Heated/cooled seats, hazards, tow/haul button etc!!!!

Could that harness SitKneelBend fix my issues? From the looks of it I don't think the clockspring will help.

Thanks

It sounds more like a fuse issue in your case. In addition, I'm not sure if the 09-12 RAMs use the same steering wheel controls as 13+. Sorry I can't be more helpful...

I had the same problem.
No horn, radio buttons, or evic buttons working. I replaced the wiring harness in the steering wheel and clock spring.

Fuse Number 49!

I swear I checked them all with a test light.

If anyone needs to buy a new clockspring or steering wheel wiring harness let me know4ed5aaa5dfd661e7b9cb8540f3d47301.jpg

So, update on this.

It was a fuse. Which I thought I checked them all. lol
But now it keeps blowing the fuse. It last about a week, then it blows.

So I'm not sure if its the clockspring, maybe it's going bad?

Now, still my dome lights don't come on when the door opens or you un-lock it with the remote. They do work when you push them.
One thread I looked said it could be the headlight switch but everything functions on it besides the dome lights coming on when you slide the dial.

Sorta at a loss. Don't wanna change the $200 clockspring when that might not fix anything.
