hello guys/gals I just bought a 2017 Ram 1500 Tradesman quad cab with 93,000Km over the summer I purchased a travel trailer and only had a van. My question is what class hitch comes factory with this year and model truck? I’ve searched google for hours and some say class 3 others say class 4. My tongue weight of the trailer is 900lbs so I am hoping it came factory with class 4. I’ve already gotten a weight distribution hitch.

I didn’t have to worry about this with a minivan and a small pop up camper.

If the reciever hitch on the truck is all welded and no bolt goes through the bumper it's the Class IV. The Class III has two bolts on the back and the one through the bumper.
Even the Class III will handle the weight of your trailer when a WDH is used.

So I don’t really need to worry about the hitch class with a WDH, the trailer is 6,500lbs 36’ long.

If you look up the Mopar Class III add on hitch for your truck, it states a WDH capability of 1K tongue/10K weight, even the CURT version has a similar rating which is believed to be the OEM manufacturer. It might be worth checking which one you have and check the bumper through bolt torque as it should be something like 275 ft/lbs.

If your hitch looks like this,it's the class 4 hitch.

That’s what it looks like when I look under the truck, but because I live in Canada there is quite a bit of scaly rust underneath… I’ll go out and post pictures from the underside.

That's the Class IV hitch, with the Class III the 2" receiver tube is bolted on to the cross bar.

As Crash said above you have the class 4 hitch. Some time spent with a wire brush and POR15 will make your under carriage look better.I'm in Alberta and the bottom side of my 14 looks like this, but i am **** about keeping things clean and painted, lol

Biggest issue you are going to have pulling that trailer isn't the weight or the Hitch Class, it is the length and height. Ball pulling a 36' trailer in any kind of wind with a short box half ton is way past being no fun. If you get large cross winds, pull over and camp till they abate, or you are going to need to drive very slowly and carefully.

I agree with Dean. A 36' trailer is as lot to handle with a short wheel base 1500. I had two 33' trailers and I personally would not go any longer. My current trailer is 29'. Also at 900lbs tongue weight you'll want to check your payload rating. Add up all your gear, passengers, and add on mods like step bars. Subtract that from your payload and that's how much you have left for your payload. I'm guessing you're maxed out or close to it.

Got everything set up I believe… truck still squats a little despite the bed being 100% level and the trailer being 100% level.

If there's a semi CAT scale near by you can check your set up. Weigh the truck and trailer fully ready to go camping then drop the trailer and weigh just the truck, that will give you all the numbers needed to calculate the tongue weight percentage an check the axle loading. Ideally you want to replace any lost front axle weight and the rear should weigh more than the front.

I live in the maritimes where they just coat the roads with salt :( May try the POR15 though.
