Hy everybody,

Strange things happens with my 2012 RAM. The car has 78K and a month ago,it started making noise at cold startup for a couple of minutes.

A sound like taptap tap like a failed lifter eating the cam.

I was thinking, ok that's it, it's time for a joy stick from Moe's.

I took it for a ride to saw if some codes were popping out but nothing.

Back home there was no more noise, nada, the engine was running quiet and smooth.

Till this day is making noise at the startup but randomly. One day nothing, the other a loud noise and another time just a little tap or taptap every 10 or 20 seconds. But when it's hot nothing.

I don't know what to think about that but it's still running great for the moment.

Maybe a puller?

What do you think about that. Every ideas is welcomed.

Broken exhaust manifold bolts more than likely.

It's called hemi tick and it is lifters or what tidefan said.

No it's not the exhaust manifold bolts, I have a set of shorty headers because of that and I know what it sounds like. It's definitively not that.
If it where the lifters why the motor is quiet and smooth when hot. If it was lifters tick I will hear it all the time not randomly at start up for a couples of minutes and it will become louder when I hit the pedal but it's not.

The oil bleeds down from the lifter bores overnight.
Takes about 30 seconds from startup to get it back up there. Try a bottle of Lubegard.

If the engine noise only happens for 30 seconds or less
The noise is just from the lifters bleeding down during the night
If you are using regular oil, switch over to Synthetic

I believe that if you look at your owners manual
It calls for MOBILE ONE & A Wix oil filter, when you do the cross referencing

...........................................................

If the noise seems to be there all the time. like when parking close to a wall or a building, that would be the time to see if the heat shields wiggle. Then that would be the time to check for broken manifold bolts.
The broken bolts would be the 4 that hold on the heat shields

Lifters tick when their is perpendicular force, it doesn't follow any logic if that is what you are attempting here. It is likely the number one known issue with hemi's. Between 70 and 130k miles most of the cams that are gonna fail do so during this period of time. Yes some fail before this, and some after this, but the other ram forum documented this fairly well. All we really can suggest is a lubrication strategy, because it works most of the time. It is the science of extreme pressure additive, known as EP additives. Couple options below, note poll results. There is some other evidence full flow synthetic filters like royal purple plus having your sump a little above dip stick also helps. good luck

Just a guess here, could be that the anti-drainback valve on the oil filter has failed (or has dirt preventing it from sealing) and instead of keeping the engine full of oil overnight it lets the oil drain back into the pan so every day you start with an oil system full of air. Solution there would be a new filter and some clean oil.

Might be intermittent due to random stop engine position. If the valve spring is compressed for a certain possibly worn lifter, it might cause the oil to bleed out of that lifter when not running, then make noise upon start-up. If engine stops in a different position leaving no additional spring pressure on that same bad lifter, may not make any noise upon start-up.

I am grasping for straws here as you have ruled out the more likely scenario's.

Thanks guys,
I have a WIX XP oil filter and I'm using Motul 300V 5w30 oil with mecacyl MOS2 oil additive.

So far I'm not afraid about a cam and lifter upgrade. I was prepared to the lifters failure and I planned to put some money on an HPT cam from Moe's.
But it's sounds really weird. The sound could last up to 10 minutes and don't sounds like a bled lifter clatter like I could heard on videos.
It's like tap...taptap.....tap...taptap definitively a metal sound.
I'll try to catch it on a video but it sounds exactly like this one ( at 1'40) and then disappear after a ride.

In the comments he says that is sound went away with an oil change. He uses Mobil1 ATM now so if I could find it I will try.
We'll see if it cures mine too.

Thats all I ever use is Mobil one.
I used to go to the quick oil change place, but they upped their prices to a hundred bucks.
I do my own on both trucks now.
My only beef is the oil filter location on both the 2017 and 2018.
Your going to need rags and dawn soap when removing it.

I picked up a six quart box at Cosco , did not do it right away.
I was getting ready, cleaning out the back tail bed, and someone stole my oil!
I turned went inside my store for a coke and gone.
I could be a jerk and put a few bbs in a fake box but I just dont roll that way.
The guy most likley sold it anyway.

Update.
I do my oil change with my MOTUL 300V (didn't find MOBIL 1 on my island), change the oil filter for a motorcraft 820 and add some mecacyl CRP and the taptap is gone.

I did some research and I've found that the MOTUL 300V must be change after 3K miles (5000KM). So it's really a matter of oil and filter efficiency. The mecacyl CRP done is job (it's a lifter ultra lubricant) and it's really impressive to see all the vapor breaking loose thru the exhaust while the mecacyl is working on the engine.
