Here we go again.

2003 4.7 with 194,000 on it. P0315 and p0339 crank faults.

Starts, idles lumpy (revs climb and drop, sometimes cuts out). Fine when warm.

Drives fine, pulls well till 3500rpm then misfires like hitting a limiter.

Various diagnostics ran. Fuel pressure is good.

Plugs, coils, cam and crank sensor replaced. Crank wiring voltage abd resistance checked. Still the same.

New code, sometimes P0016 (cam & crank).

I’m now leaning towards a stretched chain or even jumped a tooth?

Is there an easy way to check my timing that doesn’t involve stripping too much off the engine?

Do these symptoms sound similar to anyone elses experience of a stretched chain?

Thanks.

The warm up cycle has me questioning battery health.

Electrical current is at a premium when at WOT depending on accessories used during.

You probably were throughout and
Checked alternator output and the condition of the battery, electrical terminals, and ground connections.

Sometimes electrical current goes off of it’s intended path only under duress .

Warm up inconsistencies up can also mean coolant intrusion when cracks are not sealed before metals warm up.

Have you checked the cooling system for holding pressure?
(People often don’t think of this simple test.)
You’re not loosing even the slightest amount of coolant?

4.7 ‘s and 5.7’s are prone to dropping valve seats if there are the smallest of air pockets in the cooling system.

How is your serpentine belt condition and the pulley tensions?

You are (in my estimation) within that milage neighborhood for a chain takedown .

What did the oil look like when you last changed it ?
Maybe check the oil pan for debris?

Oil was good, no signs of contamination. Hasn’t used a drop of water or oil whilst i’ve had it.

Battery and charge voltage are all good. Terminals are all good. Starts fine and sits a week between runs with no battery drain.

Serpentine belt is brand new.

Gonna do the timing and oil pump and take it from there.

If you don’t pull the radiator, tape a sheet of cardbord to the face.

Good tine to replace the H20 pump too.

Timing kit is being done as we speak.

The passenger side was fully extended on the tensioner and still had a bit too much slack. So hoping that is my issue running out of sync with the crank, also been having P0 code stating something similar although i can’t remember it.

Although my engine doesn’t appear to be the original so also checked that the crank reluctor ring matches my PCM (it does, 4 plug NGC & 32 tooth). Just incase a dodgy swap had been done in the past.
