I’m looking to get a stubby antenna...I was wondering if the base comes with them or not or is there even a market for the bases? I ask because my stock black one is faded and looks like crap.

Side question...if I can’t buy a new base, can the current one be taken off and just painted?

Aloha, I have the Ronin 50 cal. It did not come with the base and the previous stubbys I've owned did not either.

You could also use the Forever Black Bumper & Trim to restore the base (you can buy on amazon). Its more of a dye than a sealant so it's just like "re painting" it but made specifically to adhere to trims and bumpers (as the name suggests).

Hope this helps.

Do you just apply it while it’s still on the truck or do I have to take the base off?

I took my stock antenna off, removed the ball on the end, cut it to my desired length, filed down the end, replaced ball on top and painted it black...freebie

Pics?

JB1-what’s your reception like with that mod??

How’d you cut it and what other steps you take?

Truck looks tough.

Reception is great, I haven't noticed any change.

To get the ball end off, use some pliers and kinda work it back and forth while using a twisting motion, it's a press fit. Then I just determined the length I wanted, placed it in a vise and cut it with a common hacksaw. Next I sanded it down with sandpaper. Next I used a file to remove any burrs where i cut it and kinda file it to a taper, during the filing I would test to see if the ball would go on the end. Keep filing until you can twist it on with force. Then I just spray painted it semi flat black. I like it because it looks unmodified and performs as oem

I bought a cheap shorty whip antenna off eBay for my Ram. Reception was so bad with it I'm back to the OEM antenna.

I had the base painted and went with an amazon stubby which causes the reception to suck. Use pandora most of the time so doesn't really matter.20180512_113640.jpeg20180512_113542.jpeg

^ Looks great!

I think the rubber whip stubby I bought off eBay is made of bubble gum and industrial waste. Literally got NO reception with the thing.

So what I’m hearing here is the brands seem to matter with getting decent reception?

I ordered this one from Amazon over a year ago... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M6CAZKK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has worked well, not as good as OEM, but pretty close. I chose it versus cutting the OEM antenna since when I am hunting or driving through trees and bushes, this doesn't get pushed/pulled like a regular antenna would. My son did the "cut the OEM antenna" mod and it looks good. But, I like my antenna better. :)

@Matt Todd I would jsut tape off the edges surrounding the base of the antenna and apply it. I've never tried taking off the actual base of the antenna.
