I want to put 2 12"s under the seat in my crew cab in the fox box. I want something that hits really hard because I occasionally like to have the crazy bass, but still be able to turn it down. I'm new to the aftermarket audio world so if y'all could help me out on some ideas that would be great!

This is the box I'm looking at as well. If there are any better ones out there let me know as well!

Ported would be better with less power.

Look also at the Kicker CVX.

Ported box is better for less power, a sealed box usually sounds cleaner depending on the type of music you listen to but requires more power to get the same output as a ported box.

I had a sealed fiberglass box built and I got a more powerful amp than I needed. This way I can keep the gain set half way and have all the bass i want with minimal distortion from the amp.

Look into the Rockford P3s or JL audio W3, I've had great results with both

I listen to all types of music but when I listen to hip hop/rap is when I want to crank these up. Should I get a custom sealed fiberglass box? I like the idea of what you did with the amps and I'll probably do the same.

In my humble opinion, I would opt for a Hybrid Audio Technologies (H.A.T.) Imagine I10SW. Don't let the size fool you (10" driver), best bang for the buck I have EVER spent for a LFE driver. Not sure how much space you can get under a seat or behind one, but at around 1.8cuft tuned to 28Hz ported, this little 10" needed to have gains turned down significantly, as it started to rattle the interior apart in my Saab 9-2x, which isn't a poorly built interior. Ran it with an Alpine MRX-V70 on just the 5th channel, and ran my H.A.T. Imagine 6.5" comps in active component mode for channels 1-4.

IMO, I went with a sealed box because I listen to a lot of country and rock, so I wanted to make sure I had nice clean bass. When I do listen to rap, I'm plenty happy with what I have, although if I could do it again I would have done 12s instead of 10s.

A fiberglass box lets you get the most possible airspace for your subs to function to the best of their ability

So would a ported box hit harder or just not sound as clean? I'm sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, I'm new to audio systems.

Ported boxes sound sloppy with some bass, because you're actually hearing the back side air movement of the sub through the ports. This generally leads to higher SPLs, but at a cost of sloppiness through reverberation that can continue after the bass note has ended. Sealed subs are more difficult to move within the box because the back side of the sub has no way to actually move (displace) the air, therefore you're only moving air on one side of the sub (the front) and instead, the inside of the box has increasing and decreasing air pressures, making the box make more of the bass sound. This leads to the sub moving less when hitting a bass note, meaning the sub will stop moving more easily, leading to less reverb, making cleaner bass notes. This also means that the same sub in ported vs. sealed boxes will sound totally different.

I hate ported boxes because I hate reverb. If you're trying to win an SPL contest, ported is usually the way to go. If you're trying to win a quality contest, sealed is the way to go. But, this is just my opinion.

I would definitely look into getting a box built or building it yourself. I haven't seen all the prefab boxes out there but the 2 that I have owned were cheap. They used 1/2" MDF which is typically thinner than the recommended specs from the sub manufacturers.

I ran 2 10" JL Audio W0's in one of these boxes in my 07. The thought never crossed my mind to put the box in my 13. I had my buddies that own a sound shop do my box for the 13. Turned out real nice and it sounds great for what it is. The factory deck limits the system ALOT, but I can't get rid of it.

The JL Audio 12" TW3's are nice. I'm impressed with them! I have 2 JL Audio XD600/1 pushing them.

I wish I knew how to work with fiberglass. I have access to free HDF board and that stuff makes awesome boxes and the board is a lot thinner than MDF needed for the same application. Years ago I built a sealed HDF truck box for four 10" HiFonics Olympian subs running off an Orion HCCA 225 amp. That setup hammered hard and not a bit of flex in the box.

I'll probably look into having one built, it just seems like the best idea. I'll be keeping my stock headunit because I have the 8.4AN and I don't want to get rid of it just yet.

I saw this JL Audio Cleansweep in another thread. Figured it could be used instead of a new headunit and still give the same sound quality. It also has the price tag of a nice new headunit as well.

When I had my 13 done at my buddy's stereo shop, we talked about the CleanSweep.... I was going to all out from the start and do components and doors... the whole nine yards. We talked about the CleanSweep then. That changed and I went with just subs for the time being. The CleanSwep left the quote. I asked about it and my buddy told me it would be a waste of money at this point. He said to wait until the components and their amps were added.

I have the 8.4a running the system. Speaker line inputs run to the XD600's and the pushing the TW3's. For running off a factory deck.... I like it. The flat subs sound good.

Okay then I'll leave that off the list until I start going into the rest of the system.

If ported sounds bad, it's install or enclosure, not because its a ported box. World Champion SQ cars have ported boxes, some have sealed. SQ will be more accurate in a sealed, easier to build, but require more power. But if you have a poretd box that's tuned to say 38hz-42hz, thats perfect for daily...will be alot louder and more what you desire.
