Is the tailgate covered under a tsb or additional coverage? Mine keeps falling but I'm at 37,000 miles now...

Hi brianw0048,

The liftgate would be under the basic 3/36, but have you had your dealership take a look at it or diagnose it for you? Since you're so newly out of warranty, additional consideration may be given depending on the repair needed.

It is the keyless lock actuator that is broken
After the lock moves a few hundred times it breaks off the little metal tab that keeps it from going too far and it hits the latches just enough to open the gate on its own

If they won’t cover it under warranty there are tons of videos of how to, It’s a easy fix- 99% sure that’s whats wrong, Ask the dealer if they will warranty it or not, if not just do it urself. It’s a Known issue I agree they should fix it on that fact alone, but that’s not likely to happen, but maybe ur dealer will agree and fix it and make Chrysler eat it? Best of luck bud.

I never liked the fact that the tailgate opened with all the doors, there should be a separate button like popping a car's trunk, needless wear. FCA should cover these repairs for the life of the vehicle as this is a design flaw.

Yeap I did not like it either so mine has been unplugged for a year or more.
No reason it could not have been a separate button.

Yeah it bugs me that it opens with other doors as well. I wonder if there is a way to hack in the ecu and make it so it needs 3 clicks for tailgate

Damn this scares the hell out of me! I always have my quad in my bed! So you guys are saying when you hit the unlock button, the tailgate could come down??? I would hate to pull away after getting in my truck and have my quad fall out while driving!
Or is that a fancy option only higher end rams have? Mine is a 2010 SLT.

It’s a lock malfunction I believe. Could happen to anyone. People are mostly complaining that when unlocking passenger doors the tailgate unlocks. And with the constant unlocking and locking parts are prematurely failing and leading to tailgates falling due to locking mechanism failure. All the more reason to install a tailgate assist. At least that way it can’t fall on someone or a kids head etc...

Thank god!!! Thanks for that info IRSmart! I was very worried

Your tailgate doesn’t lock with your remote ?

Also, if you’re worried about the quad what about some of those bed extension things to keep it from rolling out. Cheap insurance [emoji12]

I never really tried to lock it to see. But from what i gathered, it only started on 2013. But im gonna open my tailgate to check and make sure. If theres a solenoid, its getting unplugged.

You don’t have to go that far. You’ll hear a loud clunk when it locks and unlocks

If I unplug the electric lock module and simply use the key to unlock and access the bed will this cause any trouble lights to illuminate on the dash? Or would this possibly cause any issues with the security system not knowing if the tailgate is locked? If unplugged would I still have to hit the unlock before manually using the key to open the tailgate?

If this is a feasible option it really could be the answer to securing the tailgate, there is another thread talking about tailgate theft. With my tonneau in place and power cut to the tailgate, a slim jim is not going to get someone into the bed without picking the tailgate lock or attacking the tonneau with a crowbar. What do you guys think?
