Because "more is better" or "bigger is better" convinces some people.I can't understand why a pickup needs the same, if not more gears than some 18 wheelers have.
I know that because I've driven them and the one I was in had a 9 speed Road Ranger in it, whether it's auto or manual doesn't make alot of difference when it comes down to it.
You add complexity, you add potential for problems and such a trans in a vehicle the size of a standard pickup has all that stuffed into a small package (trans case) for so many gears.
With all the electronics/complexity these 10 speeds have it's no suprise they are having so many issues in the first place.
I guess the engineers decided to simplify things for better reliability.... And in the case of a Ram they gave us "The knob" without 1st or 2nd gear selections.
Hey - That'll do it!![]()

That transmission is a variant of the ZF 8AP PowerLine which is actually intended as a medium duty truck transmission. It has live drive dual PTOs capabilities. The 2025 Rams have a the new TorqueFlite 8-Speed transmissions with the new standard HO Cummins. First impressions are that it is smooth, powerful and quick.
