Just got new tires for my Ram Sport, kept the best of the old ones (dealer computer system rated it as near new) for a full sized spare. I have had full sized spares for every vehicle. Plain, correct sized steel wheel on order. 4 tie down loops in the covered bed. Thinking of a 4 way criscross over under through the wheel to the loops with some spare tie downs. I don't think I want to compromise the flat floor of the already small bed, and don't want a hitch mount. Any suggestions?

I purchased a j bolt from a 1987 ramcharger and plan to drill two holes in the inside rail of the bed to mount my 315 70 17 spare.

Right now its is laying in the center of the bed but soon, before the end of this year I'll get it mounted.

My delay is the need to verify if the sheet metal of the bed requires some reinforcement. On the old ramchargers, the assembly bolted to the inside of the bed frame but it was a solid body whereas the truck bed might be a different thickness. I'm measuring metal thickness and determining if I need to reinforce.

With the j bolt, the loop of the j goes through 2 holes and the long end of the j goes through the wheel stud or center, they used both methods, and tightens down with a conical shaped plastic hold down. It's simple and effective. If mounted up against the rear window or on one of the bed sides, probably passenger, it would be mostly out of the way.

My thoughts. With a 315 70 17, essentially a 35, it's a bit more challenging. I have a topper on the bed, so it's secure but it's bulky.

I had that setup, against front bed wall in my old Chevy C20. Worked well, This truck has a nice bed cover and isn't going to be a work truck except in the lightest kind of way. I have the spare under, but it is OEM. Current wheels and tires are larger. I also hate those dam' cable mounts. Looking to keep a sleek look for what will be mostly my toy.

Figured that, but I absolutely hate the underneath / cable thing. Bad experience on backroad Montana, long, dark & cold. Anyway, BIG wheels & Tires - worst case, a little more weight in the back end and two spares. Thanks! Maybe a new invention with some sort of serious magnet.

I ran into a guy who'd adapted the box mount spare carriers from a mid 70's Ford F150 to his box.

No the one that used to stand the tire up and mount it to the side of the box. The truck was blinged out with dual tires in the box,and more chrome then even i liked. I won't say it was greasy,but it sure was blinged out :Big Laugh:

I found a stump in the grass with one of those - even a country "fix 'most anything" shop run by neighbors told me to toss it. Thanks, though! Better than the cable thing, but I don't crawl under trucks much anymore!

Smooth exterior bed/ fender - no niche for it! A great idea when possible.

No Ford used to mount them to the inside of the box on the fleetside trucks.
If you look close at the front part of the rollbar on the drivers side,you can just barely see the top part of the spare tire mount.
Only picture i could find ,and it's not great,lol

Found another pic,with them mounted at the back of the box.The mounts could be used at either the front or rear of the box,depending on your tastes and use.

if it's just a toy truck, why not just forget about a spare and rely on roadside assistance?

I have a Dakota that's a toy, and due to the massive brakes I put on it, a spare that will fit will cost me nearly $2000. If I get a flat I'll have to call a tow truck. Been that way 10 years and I've not had to call for a tow yet.

Take a look on e trailer. They should have some mounting setups for camper back bumpers. You might be able to use one of those, and mount it into the bed.

Hey, back off, I already posted a link to etrailer!!!:mad::mad: ;):Big Laugh::Big Laugh:

If you want something special, and are willing to either do some work or pay to get it done, stand the tire up on the inside of the bed in front of or behind the wheel well, and cut out the floor to drop the tire down until it fits under the cover. Fabricate a mount to hold it in place and a half round "floor" under it to reseal the bed and protect the tire.
You could also go Jeep style with a swing away carrier behind the tailgate.
Or a roof mount. :eek::eek:

You're right! I didn't notice that that link was for etrailer, and I thought it was for under the bed mounts.

Great minds think alike... :think::waytogo:

Simply a combination of my life long attitude of being able to look out for yourself and living in rural Montana. I just got my first cell phone since I retired in '06 - my Wife bought it for me as a gift. It works with the truck which makes it easy to use and hear. I may even join AAA. Not being known for patience, I'd rather try to solve my own problem than wait for someone to come and do it for me. I have all sorts of stuff on standby to handle survival type problems, most of it unused. If it is unused when I shuffle off it will still have been worthwhile for the peace of mind owning it delivered.
I like the way the truck looks now so any storage of the spare will need to be invisible from the outside.
