jl and alpne make great subs but to me the jl's are more accurate and have better sq and the alpine's have the potential of getting loud. just my opinion. since the alpine amps work best at 2 ohm you should get them dual 2ohm so that you can wire them down to 2ohm

Exactly what BlkRamRt said JL all day for clean clear sound and alpine for big booming bass. Never been to disappointed with either but I know for fact the alpines sound great when you can give them a ton of airspace.

^^These guys are right^^
Alpine did a great job with their type R's, and they can sound really good and take a ton of abuse...but JL Audio's w3's will sound better and be more musical than the type R's IMO.
Kinda depends on the box though....the box will make or break either of those subs.

I'm not knocking either brand, but is there a reason you're looking at only them? There are so many "boutique brands" out there which aren't mainstream but were created and run by guys who LOVE mobile audio. Their gear is amazing, and can do what much of the off the shelf can only dream of.
Just saying there are options.

I just put 2 jl 1w3 10" in a sealed box they're crisp clear and loud.. My buddy bought the same box and amp as me (1000w mtx), but he bought the 3w3 12" and there's just not enough airspace and it makes it sound like junk compared to the demos in the store (which blew my head off). Not of fan of alpine in trucks, car boxes or blow-throughs is another story though.

I know this is sort of off topic, but what do you have for a front stage? If not much, I'd concentrate on that prior to upgrading subs. Your currents subs may do better with more power. I'd spend the money on a full-range amp + components if you don't have them already.

The factory speakers are absolutely horrible.

Even upgrading to a cheap set of like 50w RMS speakers will sound epic compared to the factory speakers.

If you already have Kickers in the dash, buy Kicker for your door. Or, eliminate the dash speakers, and start with a fresh set of components up front -- run off aftermarket amp.
