I'd like to see any % of motors lasting beyond 150,000 miles with no work done to them, for crap sake its metal against metal and people think theres not supposed to be worn parts..........things that baffle me

I had a 2013 ram 1500 crew cab until last saturday. Has a friend who just had this cam lifter issue in January. His is still in the shop with no end in sight.
5000 to fix and who knows when.
I lived ny ram but that was it for me as i am super paranoid.
Traded it in on a 2017 5.7 tundra crew cab

I think if everyones lasted 150000 maybe people wouldn't be as pissed off. My friends had 70k.
I think the difference is most of the time a random issue happens with motors, but when you have the same issue time and again thats a manufacturing or design issue.

Wow. You wouldn’t by any chance know what engine oil/weight he was using, or what oil change intervals he was doing, do ya? Inquiring minds wanna know.

well if you think about it there are only a handfull of parts of the long block that can fail, cam, lifters, rods, rod bearings, and pistons. where are you hearing of these issues.......here on this forum, so just cause you hear the same issue here isnt the tell all sign. So once again give me the % of motors this happening to, you realize that 100s of thousands of motors have been sold.

Believe it or not he was doing it everything 3000 miles synthetic. Way overkill which is why it freaked me out so much

No clue. But after his which has been in the shop for 3 months and now waiting on a motor. In addition to going to my dealer which is different than his, and them telling yes they have seen plenty and pulled out a destroyed cam from under the counter. I was done with trustung ny tryck anymore with a season of camping trips coming up

My '03 Saab - which is known for its awesome reliability (snort!) just rolled 200k on Monday.

I'm considering a used ram 5.7. As far as anyone knows, are all model years susceptible? I thought ram had an engine update after 2013 or so that was assumed to address this issue.

Now I'm wondering if the ecodiesel might be a little slightly less risky in spite of its mystery bottom end catastrophic failures.

Saab LMAO! My pedal bike would be less embarrassing and with minimal maintenance, go over a million miles.

whatever you said. made no sense to me
Yeah sorry i hate this fckn phone. Big fingers and tiny keyboard.
Was trying to say i asked my dealer after my friends issues to see if they had seen this problem also.
When i did they said yes they had seen quite a few and showed me a cam and lifter from under the counter that was destroyed.

as i understand that, the 5.7 is proven platform. there are hundreds of thousands engines out there, now with that being said alot of the cam failures after 2009 could be contributed to the new VCT(variable camshaft timing).

I agree it probably isn't a high percentage, my problem and my reason for getting rid of my truck was for the lack of parts to fix. He will literally be without a truck for 6 months.

I'd be very careful. Strongly recommend an extended warranty if you pull the trigger. I think any year Ram is going to have that risk of cam/lifter failure. I have a 2011 and it needed major work done between 110k and 113k miles. Good luck.
