Yes, sort-of. Tire construction does play a role for example a load range "E" tire with 8" of sidewall will ride much more roughly under unladen conditions than a load range "C" tire with 6" of sidewall. The trade of course is a tire built for a heavier load range may be necessary if you are towing to capacity and will often prove more resilient against cuts and punctures if used off road or ranch/mineral resource/construction, etc type environments.

All else equal (load range, tread pattern, width) more sidewall does almost always mean more soft & more quiet with the compromise of less sharp handling (how quickly the truck sets into a corner on steering input)

I have 285/70R17. If your present tires are 275/55R20, by comparison the tires I have are less than an inch taller and a half inch wider with two inches of additional sidewall.

OHH...that info is great... Yep do not tow just drive the dogs and a few hundred pounds of equipment from point to point once a month. basically an empty short box quad cab...I am going to see where the softer ride would slot in size wise...thanks bud!

Yes, a bigger tire sidewall, not more rim.

Theoretically, more rubber will provide more cushioning effect, of course, terrain, # of plys, and load rating will also contribute.

You can play with the online calculators and find all the dimensional details. Below, I've used your tire size and the closest 17" tire to show the differences.

If you were using the same model of tire in both of these applications (# of plys/load rating), the 17" would likely provide a more gentle ride because of the additional 1.6" of sidewall.




Or, if you prefer the 285/70R17 with 1.4" increase on the sidewall.

I run stock 265/70R/17 on my Tradesman Crew 4x4. The original Dunlops I averaged around 19.7 MPG. Cooper Adventure 21.4, and now Finalist Terrano HT 20.6 MPG. Highway. Around town, take off about 2 MPG. No engine mods other than an oil bypass can.

You will probably gain 5 MPG with a 275 or so tire, but that will depend if it is an LT or Passenger tire. Stock tires are usually Passenger. I upgraded my stock setup to a set of LT295/60R20 Mickey Thompson Baja Boss A/Ts and was averaging around 13 MPG with a 3.5inch Superlift suspension lift. I also added 4Play 4P08 20x10 -18 wheels. This setup looked amazing but sucked on gas and the right was too harsh at highway speeds. So I decided to start over. So, I removed the 3.5 inch lift altogether and replaced it with 2in RC Vertex Coilovers in the front along with a set of P285/50R20 Nitto Recon Grapplers and I‘m now getting 17-18MPGs. I dont haul or trailer much so the LT tires I had was overkill for what I needed and dropping it 1.5 inches helped greatly. I still have a beefy look, but the MPGs and ride quality is amazing!

Last year I found a very good deal on OEM Grande Cherokee rims on Kijiji, $450 for 4. No luck finding a good deal on Ram rims. The Ram Dealer in Redwater sells brand new takeoff 18" Rims for less than I could find used ones on Kijiji. They also have a ton of take off tires in stock. I would check with a few local dealers.

I notice a decent difference in economy when going from summer rubber (warlock 17x8s with 10 ply yoko 265 70 17 ~80lbs each) to winter p rated nokians 265 70 17 on old slt 17s steelies (50-60lbs each)

makes a difference on long road trips but not so much beating it around town. definitely prefer the stiff and sticky summer rubber though. actually suprised at how much I like the stock geolanders, I was fully expecting regular oem grade garage (cough cough goodyear SRA) but these yokos are tough and sticky, will handle whatever I throw at them with ease and not embarrassing off road. good tire!
