I have a 2011 1500 Outdoorsman, 4WD, regular cab, 6’ bed, 4.7 L V8, 3.92 gear, with tow package. Right now I pull a 21’ TT that weighs about 3900 dry. We’re looking at a 25’ that comes in around 5400 dry. Specs say I have a max tow weight of 7450 which leaves me very little room before hitting that max.

Any thoughts on whether or not this new TT would work with this truck. I’ve read everything from don’t go over 80% of max to this should work fine. So I’m just looking for some opinions.

It’ll pull it. But the truck won’t be happy pulling it. And it’s getting alittle big on size for a regular cab truck also. You’d do go for stepping up to a crew cab 5.7 preferably. That will give you more power and wheelbase to also help with the longer TT also.

The biggest thing will be getting the WDH set up correctly with the truck and trailer fully loaded. Find a local CAT scales to set up the WDH. Read some post by VernDiesel, he's extremely knowledgeable on how to set them up and tows TT across the country delivering them(he has over 500K on his '14 Ram 1500). https://www.ramforum.com/threads/looking-at-the-numbers.123099/
Going to larger cab will get you more wheelbase but the truck will weigh more/ less wiggle room with payload. The only real advantage to going with a newer larger cab would be getting the 8 spd trans.

I appreciate the help and link to the VernDiesel post. I’ve been leaning more towards thinking the larger camper isn’t a good idea with this truck but just wanted to get a few more opinions before making a decision.

Two things to consider - can the truck carry the weight of the tongue (and passengers, gear in the truck, etc.)? And, can the truck pull it (max tow rating, etc.)? Don't get too hung up on any single number/rating since there are two to watch.

Is the trailer 25` overall. Ball to bumper or just the box? If just the box then your probably 28` overall which is a lot for a rcsb truck. I towed my current (heavy) old Layton with a 2000 Expedition Eddie bauer just fine. Plenty of power and it was stable but I had the wdh dialed In properly.

I do try to stay less than 80% of max tow with loaded trailer weight but with the expedition i was over 90% and had no issues.

Do you have the money for a truck upgrade if you buy this rig and wind up unhappy with the performance? If so i say go for it and see what you think.

Correctly set up your wdh (buy a good one with built in sway control) and be sure to stay under grawr. That's the most important thing.

You have to decide for yourself if you want to exceed payload ratings....if this rig would put you over. I towed for years heavy with half tons with no issues. Remember it's not a drag race and you will have to get runnies at hills and she'll work hard (high rpms on grades) but let her work. Keep it maintained well and you won't hurt it.

I hope this helps. Good luck.
