Towing question

So I got a new utility trailer and I noticed that with the level and tires on my truck that it is just a little too tall, have to physically pick the trailer up on to the ball and the trailer rides on a slant...is there anyway to level it keeping the tri ball I have. I've seen drop shackles but they require a new ball setup and mine was a gift and I'm going to keep it...possible?

Just go to Wally World and by a different amount of drop. Inserts come in various drops such as level, 2" 4" 6" etc... General rule of thumb is the ball mount should be at 18" above the grade.

They aren't that expensive, and you can use your "Gift" at other times.

If you tow only one trailer all the time a fixed drop, of appropriate drop, is your solution. If however you tow various trailers, I have found the multi-adjustable types preferable.

This is what I generally use unless I need load distribution.

Can I use my existing tri ball hitch with this setup or does it need a special one?

Since it is a single axle you don't have to level it like a tandem axle. The only reason to level it is to keep the rear from dragging and it's easier to load things on it other than that if it isn't a dramatic lean I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't completely agree with the "single axle doesn't need to be level". depends on the trailer and load. Small utility trailer? prob not a big deal but on my single axle bass boat it makes a huge difference being level. get it close as possible

That's not necessarily true.

I had a tracker aluminum boat, and pulled it behind a 7800 lb 97 dodge 3500 4x4 dually, which had it sitting nose high by about 6". I didn't think it would matter either, but it did.

That was enough for air to get under it and lift the weight off the trailer enough so the axle started vibrating against the springs, and it would make you think a helicopter was landing in the bed. It would literally make you stop and look to see if you just shredded a tire.

I leveled it out, and no more problem.
