Alrighty, new here so bare with me. 02 4.7 1500. Running low on gas, (and by low I mean almost on fumes) Stopped, topped the tank went to pull out and he (yes my truck is a boy) started sputtering like a ****** Died SEVERAL times on the way home. Would not stay running unless my foot was on the gas. Ran code, came back misfiring on multiples (#2 and #4) Pulled/ checked-no issues. Wanted to check dist/rotor, boyfriend said it has coil packs (man I miss my 89 'Kota!) Anyway, checked vacuum lines etc. Been reading up (mostly here) and thinking TPC or IAC. Question is - Is there another way to tell if either is bad without just going out and replacing them? Or is that possible. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hope so. I really dont like these newer vehicles. I prefer pre 1975. In those its only fuel, fire and compression. I hate sensors and relays and crap. Will fell better when I get around to getting a real service manual for it.

Technically your truck is a 3rd gen (2002 2nd gens were 2500 and 3500). We will leave that to the moderators. =)

Anyway...maybe something got sucked into the fuel pump blocking the filter enough to cause misfires. (maybe not enough pressure getting by?) Just a guess. Good luck!

You should never run these trucks below 1/4 tank.

It runs **** into the fuel system and injectors and causes the pumps to overheat, long term damage.

I know I shouldnt run it low. I dont usually but**** happens. I put a new pump and filter on it the first week in November. Just put a new tps and idle control on it about 30 minutes ago. Its running better (as in a little smoother) but still stalls at an idle. That was 110 bucks down the drain. =/

If you're still getting a missfire code I would have the injectors tested in those cylinders...they may be plugged. Mayben a bit of Chevron or Lucas Fuel injector cleaner would help.

One other thought...did you get the gas cap on tight after it was fueled up? A loose cap will let too much air into the system, causing just the symptoms you describe.

The fuel cap gasket will also fail and cause this condition to occur.
