Does anyone get annoyed with the new feature in the 2015 Ram 1500 tranny/eng controls. When you open the driver door ( could be passenger also, not sure) the transmission will disengage from either D or R. the dash starts flashing letting you know its not in gear.

Any way to turn this safety feature off? When i am backing up ( no rear camera) I will open the door to get a better view at how much more I can go before hitting the car parked behind me.

It didn't come that way from the factory, they did a PCM flash and added it. There were a few stupid people that ran themselves over after not putting the vehicle in park.

The seat belt extenders are the easiest way to defeat it or jump out the seatbelt switch so that it thinks the belt is on.

Or you could just buckle your seatbelt either over you or behind you if you just absolutely have to have the door open to back up. I’ve also verified that holding your foot on the brake accomplishes the same thing.

But I’d be reluctant to go the seatbelt extender route. I’ve never used one personally but since it basically does the same thing as splicing the wires together that go to the buckle that I did on my old truck to completely turn off the seatbelt light on the dash, it also disabled all my warning chimes as well. Well, not all of them but the key-in-ignition reminder and the lights-on reminder quit working.

As others have said...It's a feature to protect stupid people from themselves. Don't get me wrong, I'm not calling you stupid, it's just a fact that many people have fallen from their vehicles, or bent their doors backwards, doing this exact thing

It's another attempt to make the world idiot proof. If it saves one person from running over themselves it is worth it. You just cant fix stupid.

I missed that. I though it was standard and required by Govt nannies after a certain year?

It is, but I believe it became effective starting on 2018 models.

Yeah and another thing, ya really can’t blame the manufacturers for trying to make themselves lawsuit-proof as well, in this sue-happy world we live in.

I ordered one of these last week. Sometimes I forget to buckle up behind me when I am backing the travel trailer in. I though it would be easier to just stab this thing in for those few occasions when I need to back up with the door open while not wearing my seatbelt.

The title of thread is a whole different meaning if you use the other context of tranny. It’s fun to do that sometimes

You may thank the all-knowing elitists in government who think that if one person does something stupid, all citizens are therefore stupid and must be protected from themselves.

Worked with a guy a few years ago who always opened the door to back up. He stopped doing that when he fell out of the truck and it ran over him.

This may sound a little harsh, but guys like that NEED to be weeded out of the gene pool...
I can't stand when we get BS stuff like this one mandated by gov. upon all of us because some people are stupid.
I can't stand the open door thing, but really, if you never take your foot completely off the brake, the truck will still let you move slowly with the door open. Since "idle" is not good enough to move the vehicle on all types of terrain/hills, I brake-torque a little bit to get by this feature. Basically, allply the brake fully and then hit the gas a little bit, and then use the slow release of the brake to let you move as slow or as fast and as far as you need to...

It has nothing to do with the seatbelt being on. The trans. reverts to "park" if the door is open when the truck is in gear and the foot is taken off the brake pedal. So long as your foot doesn't come 100% off the brake pedal, you CAN roll with the door open... See my other response for the work around...
