I bought my truck used with 80,000 miles. Now has 105000 and I was going to have the trans fluid drained and filters changed. Fluid looks good so I’m wondering if the previous owner already had it done. So my question is if there is any way to tell if the fluid needs to be changed or not?

You can take a sample and send it to Blackstone.

If it smells bad (burnt) or is at all discolored I'd just change it. It looks like you have a 2012 which has the 6 speed and you can change it and the filter pretty easily....just messy. The 8 speed takes a very special fluid, no dipstick, and probably should be done at the dealer....wish I still had my 6 speed.

Pretty sure the 8spd is never supposed to be changed.

I've heard Target has a good selection of trans fluid though.

If I do it myself, does it all come out of the torque converter?

Not all of the oil will come out of the TQ with a simple drain & fill.

If it is red, it is still good.

This is a great dyi transmsion flush. Only way to drain all the fluid, drop pan change filters and fill, then put return line in bucket and add qrts as you start truck. Use redline c+, ester based tranny fluid doubles or triples your oci. Similar technology as the new 8 speed, pao/esters. They say pao is lifetime fluid, we adding esters is that much better. Redline c+ can be bought from Nick at gotexhaust a vendor here, cheapest price around. Protects transmission better and longer.

Anything off red I change the fluid, when this says ok I say that is past when I change it. I'm changing it as soon as I see the pink. I believe the 8 speed fluid isn't red though, this is for the 6 speeds.

Drain and fill will be great you will likely never need to do a complete flush until the trans is ready for a rebuild which is a long time away if you take care of it.
