Hey, I was wondering if you guys might be able to help me with this.

So i bought a 2000 ram 1500 not to long ago and it just recently started having problems. The truck goes into rev and drive fine and when I first start out, everything seems fine. After driving it for a while it has a hard time getting into 3rd. usually it only has problems after i come to a complete stop, when accelerating again it won't go into 3rd. I just had the throttle cable that goes to the trans replaced and it seemed to make the problem a lot better but it still happens. When i had that replaced i also had them put it on a scanner but it wasn't throwing any codes.

I have been having some problems with battery connectivity as well, nothing really that i can't fix myself, but could that be causing the issue? Could the current to the trans be inadequate to shift it into third? But wouldn't that throw a code as well?

I don't have the money to have a trans rebuild done. I'm pretty lost. any help you guys can give me that's not get a new trans kid, would be appreciated.

I'd drop the pan and see whats going on in there. Check the magnet, if theres lots of shavings.... well I won't say it since you asked not to haha.

Could also try adjusting TV cable but I don't think that is your issue.

Could be a governor solenoid. But I can never remember what those guys do.

As John said, drop the pan, see what's there. Too many shavings...IMMA SAY IT.

Too many shavings, you'll need a new transmission. :D

I've been having the same problem, I had a P0740 (Tq converter) code and o2 sensor code, replaced the sensor and it solved the problem. Problem started back up a little while ago and code popped back up. It also developed a problem where it acts like im holding the brake when starting from a stop. Has no power until I get to about 20mph and then its fine (aside from the 3rd gear shift problem every now and then), also P0764 code with it (shift solenoid C)

Your problem seems to me like the TC is partially locked. If it was completely locked the truck would die.

What part of the problem would that be? would that be the problem with 3rd (like the op) or would that be my first gear prob?

Could be either in your case. Sluggishness in 1st is either A) slipping bands B) restricted fluid flow (though that would usually be seen in all gears) or C) a lagging/partially locked TC.

In third gear, there can be TC lock up if you have OD turned off. But when it shifts into fourth, soon there after the TC locks.

I'd say 3k max.

Range is usually anywhere from $1700-2500.

I know my local shop quoted me at $2250, which, tbh, is high.

I know when my time finally comes, I want to limp it across the border to PATC in Shreveport. :naughty:

is the TV cable adjusted correctly? the 46 will act out all day long if the TV cable is too tight. Like hang up in third, etc. How many miles on it?

Well it got its 4th rebuild at about 60k....lol. Now I'm sitting at about 121.5k. Also just found out that since the last rebuild my dad never changed the filter or fluid then passed it on to me at 112k :banghead:

Man everybody hates the 46re. :) I used to own a commercial landscape company and I had 8 of the Gen 2 half ton rams pulling 15 foot tandem lawn trailers. Every single one of them went well past 200K, and we never had to rebuild or replace the trans in them ever. The big thing was - transmission service AND band adjustment. Every 10K miles.

Oh, and the little 318's were bulletproof too. :)
